Apparently baby blood is Kosher?

When I read that I thought, aha! I bet the blood libel myth had something to do with this practice in circumcision.

And I found this journal article that suggests indeed that was the case!

Abraham Gross (1995). "The Blood Libel and the Blood of Circumcision: An Ashkenazic Custom that Disappeared in the Middle Ages", Jewish Quarterly Review, Volume 86, pp. 171-174.

The author states that the mohel would use a cloth to wash himself of blood and then that bloodied cloth would be publically displayed at the synagogue entrance when it was time for the circumcision celebatory feast, and the cloth would be removed when all the guests for the meal have entered. Then the rumor arose among Christians in the community that Jews needed Christian blood to heal the circumcision wound. One practice at the circumcision feast was to have the baby sip from a glass of red wine. This was misunderstood by Christians as the baby drinking blood to help it heal, and the bloodied cloth at the entrance announced that this was going to be a blood feast.

I posted a link in the article to the NYC Dept of Health's site--they have an entire page denouncing the practice. They've known about the practice (and this Rabbi) at least since 2004 when other babies were injured (one suffering brain damage). Reportedly they have not prevailed in efforts to stop it.

OMG, I just checked Jack C's link. It says this has been an ongoing issue in NYC for >100 yrs and has disgusting pics and details. It's not even the first death.

What will it take for society to come to its senses about religious freedom having no limits?

It's not against the law. A court injunction was abandoned by the city.

JOURNAL OF LAW AND HEALTH [Vol. 19:297] ~pg 29 discusses the freedom of religion issue.

The church itself urged this ritual be performed using a tube between the child's penis and the Rabbi's mouth. However:

It is estimated that approximately 4000 rituals involving metzitzah be’peh are
performed each year in highly Orthodox Jewish communities in New York. Those
that resist any form of regulation, government interference, or modification of the
ancient ritual of oral suction base their claims on two grounds. First, that oral
suction is a necessary component to effectuate the bond between the child and God.
And second, that the First Amendment of the United States Constitution protects
religious freedom. Most Jews have long abandoned metzitzah be’peh in the absence
any express instruction for the ritual within the Talmud, or have modified the ritual
suctioning of blood to be done via a glass tube.

Oral-suction proponents’ first argument fails. As evidenced by the majority of
Jewish followers that have abandoned direct mouth to penis contact, Judaic Law
does not expressly mandate the use of metzitzah be’peh to effectuate a covenant
between the child and God. Their second argument also fails. While the First
Amendment absolutely guarantees freedom of religious belief, religious actions
based on those beliefs are not absolutely protected. As the United States Supreme
Court held in Hialeah, government action that interferes with the free exercise of
religion must meet strict scrutiny, and in the rare instance that it does meet this
standard, it will be constitutionally valid.

The City of New York can and should ban metzitzah be’peh.
