Who Was Herbert W. Armstrong?

Herbert W. Armstrong led the Worldwide Church of God (formerly the Radio Church of God until 1968) until his death in 1986. Tens of millions of people heard his voice and read his literature. God called him in the fall of 1926, and he was converted in the spring of 1927. Over the course of his 52-year ministry, God revealed from the Bible hundreds of true doctrines through him, which had been lost through the centuries; Mr. Armstrong said this many times himself. In the years after his death, his successors ceased to believe and teach these doctrines. Although copyright law prohibits The Restored Church of God from reproducing and distributing literature produced during the time he led the Worldwide Church of God, The Restored Church of God is committed to preserving and teaching all the truths that he taught!

WOW! That article could have been taken from any WT article. Wierd. The line of reasoning on bdays is exactly the same.

I looked at the video of their interpretation of the two witnesses and they are very similar to JW's, not in their actual interpretation but in their methods. He regarded all other theories of the two witnesses and "cooks" and even "stupid". Of couse, with great frequency, he regarded their own doctrine as "the truth". Sound all too familiar?

Under their article, "Are You Being Called", the follwing statements are made:

-"When placed toge the r, the se passages explain that God is calling a few people—actually a very few—out of the world for His supreme purpose. Those who respond to His calling are the n “chosen,” going on to repentance, baptism and conversion."

-"After reading some of the literature from The Restored Church of God, many come to recognize that the y have been brought into contact with extraordinary understanding. The y find the mselves learning things that the y have never heard before. The y notice that the Bible makes sense—that it is not as hard to understand as the y had previously thought. The n, feeling a growing need to act on what the y are learning, many wonder, “Am I being called by God?”

-"When you read or hear the se things in our magazines, books, booklets, articles and The World to Come programs, do the y have meaning to you? Are you grasping the m? Are the y plain to your understanding? Do you see the m as special knowledge o the rs do not have? Do you feel tempted to pinch yourself in disbelief that you could be shown things of which the masses have no idea? If the answers to the se questions are “yes,” the n God is calling—“drawing”—you! The mysteries of the kingdom of God are being given to you !"

----->Those are just a few of the statements but they could just have easily come from any JW magazine from any year. I sense a CULT!!!

The World Wide Church of God had a major split around 1985, There`s a youtube video something like "The World Wide Church of God - Called to be free" (????).

The main leaders of the Church, turned their back on Armstrongs Whacky theology when he popped his clogs, and became more Orthodox, along the lines of Evangelical Christianity, in that they accepted/ came to understand the meaning of Grace, Divinity of Christ and so on.

A splinter of the original WWCOG kept up Armstrongs teachings, and are steaming on full of weird interpretations of world Politics and so on. Very much in the JW line of mentality, if not worse!

Wiki covers it well, and there are several Youtube Vids that can explain it better than my half remembered effort. I must apologise for my inability to post links for some reason..

It is, a quite interesting story, from every point of view, if you have the time to follow it through.
