Awake 73 March 22 p.12 "the spirit of competition between players can lead to unplesant circumstances...in some homes tensions linger long past checkmate...Chess has been a game of war since it originated...the games conection to war is obvious....a play substitue for the art of war...there is a danger of stirring uo competition with one another even developing hostility with one another something the bible warns against....What effect does playing Chess have on one? Is it a wholesome effect? ....there are questions regarding it that each one who plays chess should consider."

Witness 007 = I think Monopoly is a greedy commercialist game that Witnesses in good standing would not play. Playing "cards" of ANY sort is showing support for the royal family and "the beast." See I could write for Awake too.

Yes, I read the article only recently after noticing it mentioned on the "quotes" website. I couldn't believe it until I checked Watchtower Library myself, and there it was. It was just a silly, silly article - arguably the Awake at its lowest. Mrs Cedars couldn't believe it either, as her Dad is a keen chess player, and chess is unquestionably one of the most innocent games you could conceivably enjoy.

Yes... Chess playing can turn violent... but if you put on your boxing gloves before you start the game, the blows won't hurt as much...

That's a funny quote. Thanks W007. I wonder what their new position (AKA, "new light") on that is now.

    Witness 007,

In Watchtower’s World chess went from the image of wisdom to being a being the Debils work.

Elders have made the case for "Monopoly" instead of "Chess", anyone detect the insanity of this argument, I can tell a story about a nasty argument, two elders came close to "blows" over this subject. What is the goal of "Monopoly? What is the goal of Chess?

There was also an article on Pac man promoting greed and gluttony when that was the in thing. How anybody can take that organization seriously is beyond me. But I guess I did it too for a time.

Yes, my father frowned on chess and lectured me about it, but then again, he never forbid me from playing it. Therefore, I learned on my own when I was a teenager. It gave me a r ebellious outlet. Unfortunately, I had no human opponent and never learned good chess strategy, so my ability to play isn't worth a lick. It is funny to tell people from a non-JW background this stuff, "My father frowned on me playing chess." And they are like, "What!" I don't think they believe me.
