I remeber after 9/11 how my Middle school become very patriotic. I think that excessive patriotism in any country is not good.

One thing to remember or look up, 1954 was in the midst of the Cold War and the Mccarthy committee where they were looking for a traitor under every "rock" up to the point McCarthy challenged the head of the Army itself.

My father was not a jw and was career military having fought in WW2, worked behind the scenes in Europe setting up spy installations, and spent part of his career in Vietnam. Despite his other serious faults, he never felt saying the pledge proved loyalty, any more than reciting the Lord's prayer made one a Christian. He said a real "spy" would have no problem saying the pledge to protect his or her identity.

Maybe I had few problems because I went to military schools and they were not so quick to force "loyalty" on us students.
