    All of this is very true.

    When you are in Watchtower inc it's easy to ascribe every good thing to Jehovah and all bad things to Satan but in reality we have to sort out our own problems.

    My cousin is a 'Born Again', and even when I offer him a lift into town he thinks that the Lord has sent me. In reality, I'm just showing him a kindnes but rather than thank me he'd rather thank the Lord.

    Likewise, if he feels like doing someone a favour he is convinced that the Lord has 'moved' him to do it. Indeed, the Lord talks to him all the time!

    He's harmless enough though. If he tries to establish a worldwide, money making business out of it I'll clamp down on him.

    But until than, peace.

    What are your thouhts on the model prayer... this is how you should pray....Our father...etc

    Greetings, dear ST, and peace to you! I am glad to have been of some help to you. The prayer Christ taught is not so much about its form as about its CONTENT. In that prayer, he showed us WHAT we are to ask for:

    1. Things pertaining to the glory of God FIRST -

    a. "Hallowed be/may YOUR/thy name be cleansed/sanctified/held holy" (so, we KNOW it is not "Jehovah", given what is done IN that name that sullies it SO much, we can even see how those HERE frequently use/refer to/scorn it);

    b. "May YOUR/thy kingdom come/arrive/be established" (which is accomplished when Christ returns and the chosen ones are fully gathered, resulting in "New Jerusalem"... coming down [out of] the spirit realm...);

    c. "May YOUR/thy will be done" (in the physical realm as it now is in the spirit realm)

    2. THEN, things pertaining to ourselves, including FOR ourselves and as TO ourselves -

    a. "Give us our DAILY bread/for the day" (which is NOT physical food... but the "manna" from heaven,the flesh of Christ - just as Israel prayed each day to receive manna back THEN);

    b. "Forgive us OUR debts/sins/trespasses" (against Him, Christ, and others);

    c. "AS we forgive those who sin/trespass against us" (meaning, to the same extent WE forgive others... please forgive us... so it behooves us to be VERY forgiving... if we want to be VERY forgiven);

    3. THEN, for help against our Adversary(because as man's ACCUSER, we ARE subject to be tested/tempted by HIM):

    a. "Lead us not/do not allow us to be led... into temptation" (do not allow us to be so led, but teach us to resist);

    b. "But deliver us from evil/the wicked one" (do not do as with Job and hand us over to the Adversary to be tested so, but deliver us from that Enemy);

    c. "For THINE is the kingdom/the kingdom is YOURS... forever and ever" (so you CAN deliver us from such temptation and possible failure, if you only WANT to, because the kingdom IS yours... and you have authority over all. Please, then... "want to"... for OUR sakes...and YOUR glory.)

    Besides these things, there really isn't anything else we NEED to pray for... because the Most Holy One of Israel already KNOWS what we NEED. Out of LOVE, however, God... through Christ... allows us to also ask for what we might WANT; however, WE cannot ask in and of ourselves - we need a sponsor... one who is "worthy" of such request(s). And so, we can ask... in CHRIST'S name. However, again, before we can do so, we must gain access... entry... INTO the Most Holy... which we can only do by going THROUGH... the Holy.

    It is really the same with the model prayer: we really should approach "Joseph" FIRST... so as to obtain PERMISSION/LEAVE... to go in before "Pharaoh." You can't just barge into the "throne room" - you have either be invited in... or escorted by someone who already has the right to be there. Only the High Priest has the UNLIMITED right to go into the Most Holy (throne room). This High Priest, Christ, however... has authority to take/allow OTHERS in, as well (which was not the case at alll with the Aaronic/Judaic priesthood - then, ONLY the High Priest could enter).

    If, however, one is asking to KNOW God... and/or to be known BY God... and to know HIS Truth... as did, say, Cornelius... one can circumvent this "protocol." Because in that case, God will acquiesce and "draw" such one TO Him... by drawing them TO Christ... who, afterward, will LEAD one "in".

    People think that you can just utter some words and poof!, you're golden. Doesn't work that way, though, dear one. You must:

    1. Believe that the One you're attempting to communicate with exists (and not just "testing" to find out);

    2. Understand what it actually is that you should... and are... asking FOR (it CANNOT be merely for the satisfaction of your empirical senses! God is a SPIRIT and so requests for things that satisfy our "sensual" pleasure (please the SENSES), are usually not granted. Rather, it is the things of the SPIRIT that we receive);

    3. That if you ARE asking to know Him... be known by Him... and so know HIS Truth (all of which pertain to the SPIRIT)... He WILL respond and lead you to that One;

    3. Go THROUGH that One, the Holy One of Israel... who is the Door.

    I realize that this may seem like a "lot" to some; however, it really isn't. Given the time we spend learning to, say, program our DVRs, TVs, operate our vehicles, put together a child's toy, install a cabinet, build a... whatever... this is nothing. If we willing, then, to spend the time to "learn" how to do these other things (indeed, attend classes/read entire manuals)... what is it to take a few moments to ponder what Christ was actually saying... and TEACHING... us on this matter? You can read the verses in less than a minute.

    But it's not about rote reading/repeating. It's about UNDERSTANDING what he was saying: WHAT we are to pray FOR... more so than how we are to say it. We can repeat the words from here to kingdom come. But if we aren't TRULY asking for these things... IN OUR OWN HEARTS... then we've entirely missed the point. It's not as the WTBTS says, that we "must know what we are praying for." We must WANT the things we are paying for... when we say the "model" prayer. NOT because the WTBTS or other religion SAYS we should want them, but because WE want them.

    And it doesn't matter what words are used. It is the CONTENT... SUBSTANCE... and TRUTHFULNESS... that is important when we pray. Not the FORM. So, just saying, "Our Father who art in heaven hallowed by thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done..." yada, yada, yada... is just that: yada... yada... yada.

    If you don't BELIEVE it... or MEAN it... and haven't entered in the proper manner... THROUGH THE DOOR... you are merely praying... to yourself.

    I hope this helps, dear ST, and again, peace to you (and your partner)!

    YOUR servant and a slave of Christ,

    SA

    The model prayer also seems to be more of an affirmation of one's beliefs to God. We are continually declaring our allegiance and reaffirming it when we use the model prayer. Consider the following"

    Our Father who resides in Heaven -- We're making a formal distinction between the God of the Bible and the other "gods" that exist.

    Holy is Thy name --We're recognizing that by being "Holy", His ways are just. "I Shall Prove To Be What I Shall Prove To Be" is His name and any purpose associated with it will come to fruition.

    Let your Kingdom come, let Your will be done --We're telling God that we are looking forward to His kingdom coming upon the earth and His will being accomplished.

    On Earth just as it is in heaven --Self explanatory

    Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our sins, in the same manner that we forgive others-- Consider the Egyptians who came out of Egypt with the Hebrews during the Exodus. They were the first to complain about the Manna that was provided for them rather than being happy they had anything at all. They didn't appreciate the gift. Unfortunately the Hebrews joined in with the Egyptians and complained as well. Had they not done so, it's likely they would have made it to the Promised Land much quicker. So all we ask of God is what we need to sustain life for this day, not for tomorrow or next week, but for today. The part about forgive us for our sins reminds us of Jesus' words at Matthew 5:23, 43-48

    23 "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

    43 "You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[i] and hate your enemy.' 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

    Both scriptures show that we must forgive others first IF we want God to forgive us. There may be things we have forgotten about that God is still waiting for us to reconcile. By not forgiving others freely of their sins, we impede our relationship with God. Now something about forgiveness here should be noted. Just because you forgive someone that does not mean you allow yourself to be hurt or abused by them. You're simply forgetting the trespass and not holding on to your anger. But you're also showing love to yourself and the other person by not allowing them to do the same thing to you again. How are you showing love to them? If you never let it be known to another that you do not like their actions, how are they to change? How is a child to know right from wrong if a parent doesn't tell them? Same with our friends and associates.

    I think Shelby has covered the rest pretty well. I just wanted to emphasize that to me the Model prayer is more of a personal declaration of faith than anything else. It's still a prayer (communication tool), but albeit a much more personal one. Within it's context is everything we ever need ask for.

    Thanks aguest...you have given me quite a bit to think about...thank you for taking the time to explain and answer me.

    I have for most of my life had an issue with repeating prayers over and over (I was originally catholic) ...even the model prayer. It always seemded so false to me...just mindless babble.

    What I couldn't get was WHAT he said...I took it that we prayed to "our father" directly. If I understand you correctly, you are saying that we do depending on what we are praying about. But we still need to show that respect to the son because that shows love to the father....so then...we ask in his "Jesus" name?...othewise...we ask/speak to Jesus? (as in through Jesus as our mediator)...*don't know why italics..hit wrong key and can't get rid of it*

    Yeah. Sounds like the power of 'positive thinking'.

    Agreed punk. If you want to believe something and keep telling yourself it over and over, eventually you'll believe it. Just ask Stuart Smalley...

    You cannot approach the Father, dear ST (again, peace to you!), without going THROUGH... and so gaining permission FROM... the Son. While it is to the Father that we PRAY... it is to the Son that we SPEAK... so as to ask for and gain access TO the Father. And understanding of Joseph's position in Egypt might help:

    "... Pharaoh said to his officials, "Isn't this the man we need? Are we going to find anyone else who has God's spirit in him like this?" So Pharaoh said to Joseph, "You're the man for us. God has given you the inside story—no one is as qualified as you in experience and wisdom. From now on, you're in charge of my affairs; all my people will report to you. Only as king will I be over you." So Pharaoh commissioned Joseph: "I'm putting you in charge of the entire country of Egypt." Then Pharaoh removed his signet ring from his finger and slipped it on Joseph's hand. He outfitted him in robes of the best linen and put a gold chain around his neck. He put the second-in-command chariot at his disposal, and as he rode people shouted "Bravo!" Joseph was in charge of the entire country of Egypt. Pharaoh told Joseph, "I am Pharaoh, but no one in Egypt will make a single move without your stamp of approval." ... And Joseph took up his duties over the land of Egypt."

    Just as back then no one could even CONSIDER receiving grain from Pharaoh's stash... let alone entering BEFORE Pharaoh... without having gone to Joseph for permission and approval FIRST... so, too, no one can come to the Father... unless they go THROUGH Christ. You HAVE to approach HIM, the HOLY One of Israel... as "Joseph"... to even get PERMISSION to go before God, the MOST Holy One of Israel... as "Pharaoh." Because he is the DOOR... the "holy" that you must go THROUGH... in order to enter into the "most holy".

    There is NO other way, dear one. Thus, he is recorded to have said: "I... am the Way. NO ONE comes TO the Father... except THROUGH me."

    The WTBTS, unfortunately, tries to go AROUND him... climb up some OTHER "way"... by trying to go straigh to "Jehovah." Just like you and I could never get in before the Queen of England... or the President of the U.S., etc.,... without following the proper PROTOCOL, including completing a background check and being "CLEARED"... no one... NO ONE... comes to the Father (Pharaoh)... without going through the Son (Joseph). NO ONE.

    Go to Joseph... and ask of HIM... permission to enter before Pharaoh. And when you DO so enter, let "Pharaoh" know... it is in the name of the "Joseph"... that you come, that that is the One YOU recognize as giving you access.

    Truly... there is NO other Way. Just doesn't work. You will be deemed a "thief" (one who broke in without permission, by coming through something other than the "door")... and either blocked... or cast right back out.

    Again, I hope this helps and bid you peace!

    Like most all of you, I have never had a prayer answered, in fact this past weekend was talking with a Baptist and he was talking about prayer being a communication with God. I told him communication is at a minimum a two way thing, not one person mumbling to themselves and the conversation/prayer hardly constitutes two way communication. It takes both parties to talk. When one side doesn't one has to realize they are only talking to themselves.

    Asking God through Jesus to help spouse, children, and or friends hasn't helped anyone unless one wants to read the mythology of the old testament. If God really gives a damn about anyone down here then he should make his presence known. Being silent doesn't help, and then one finds that they themselves or family and friends helped them. Not the receipient of the vocalized chanting/prayer. They/he/she sits on high and ignores.

    The Most Holy One of Israel, JAH of Armies, does indeed speak, dear ssn587 (peace to you!). Through His Son, the Holy One of Israel. True, that One is not loud and boisterous... but if one can bring oneself to be "quiet" (meaning, get past your own "noise", which includes not only the things of the outside environment, but what's INSIDE you, as well)... you CAN hear him. Clearly, audibly.

    If, however, you need something along the lines of birds chirpping or water trickling... or people chattering, TV blaring, radio humming, buses/trucks clanging, clocks ticking/chiming, airplanes passing, sirens screaming, cows mooing, coyotes baying... and all the other "sounds" of OUR world... then you're most probably going to hear that... and only that.

    Folks didn't pay attention when the Most Holy of Israel spoke... AUDIBLY... on the earth... dear one. Nor when His Son spoke to them directly. That's not gonna happen anymore - we had our chance with that. Now... it's YOU who must listen... and to the One He said to listen TO. The game has changed... and we're the ones who chose that.

    Again, peace to you!

    I think it is really hard for most people to pray.

    They feel they need a "protocol" and that they need to say certain things and not forget other things and I feel that most people tend to pray because they WANT something they WANT, no so much soemthing they need.

    The tend to pray and ask for something with an almost " do this and I know you exist" vibe.

    If there is a God then he most assuredly KNOWS YOU when you pray to Him with Love and pray with humility and He certaibly does talk to Us and we do indeed hear Him, even if we tend to ignore and follow our own path anyways.
