The $229 million figure isn't the build cost - it is the estimate of the total economic activity generated by the project. Probably a bit high , as these benefits invariably are exaggerated when a large capital project like this is announced in order to encourage the planning officers & local council officials. In reality , there will be very little economic benefit to the local community other than building material supplies companies - the result is a gated community with very little spend generated for local businesses during construction or operation. The WTBTS says that only 25% of the work is done by paid workers , with 75% by volunteers.

Even so , a huge long term project for an organisation which has claimed (for 140 years) that Armaggeddon is imminent. As often stated , the MO of the WTBTS is -

Step1: Buy land (with donations) , build (with donations & mainly volunteer labour) , use for a few years , sell on at a huge tax free proft.

Step 2: Go to step 1.

Here is the PDF at the Patterson NY city website

    http://www.pattersonny.org/PlanningBoard/Watchtower/part1.pdf

    Highlights:

The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, Inc., (the “applicant”) proposes to
expand the Watchtower Educational Center (WEC) in the Town of Patterson by adding
approximately 904,000 square feet of new interior building space with a footprint of
approximately 186,000 square feet. In addition, 434 new parking spaces would be added to the
project site, 351 of which would be located in parking garages.

    CONSTRUCTION
Construction of the proposed project would occur in 10 phases over a 48-month period between
February 2010 and February 2014. Construction would include six new buildings, roadways,
sidewalks, parking areas, and stormwater detention basins. Infrastructure and utility
    improvements would also be incorporated.

    Education?

Can't be "higher" education, can it?

Must definitely be lower education. As in low standards.

Let's see if a call goes out for volunteers who have a college education to give of their time, money, and skills for this new project. That also is part of the MO of the WTS: beg for help from college-educated Witnesses for a particular project and then denounce higher education once the project is completed.

This looks very similar to proposals they made nearly 10 years ago to expand WEC at Patterson. From the time of initial construction, some things were setup with the possibility of expanding toward the orchard area. From what I knew, the locals weren't opposed to expansion, it was just that expanding at Patterson was much more difficult than expanding at Wallkill. WTF was all flat with lots of open acreage to throw up more buildings. Patterson is on a hillside, making construction much more complex to engineer elevations and handle materials on site. I'd assume that they file paperwork in the dream that they'll have the opportunity to expand at Patterson. Realistically, it would be more likely that Patterson wouldn't expand.

The completion of the works is scheduled for 2014.-- No kidding!! I just find that date funny as hell! I dunno, maybe I'm in a silly mood today.

The end is near! The end is near!! well, maybe ......... just give us more money and maybe we can hold it off for awhile until we get our education facility built. Will it fit all the resurrected jw's or what?

Back in 1975 (when Armageddon was supposedly only months away), I remember the closing talk at the District Convention had the speaker telling the audience, "We're not watching the clock! We're going to keep busy in the preaching work until Armageddon strikes!" So the WTS has always insisted that while the End is indeed near, its proximity should not influence any business decisions. The proposed expansion project is another evidence of that.

You forgot "...and the liquor stores."

This is a Bethel expansion, after all.
