The word 'next' caught my attention too. It implies that he's already done something, which he hasn't.
I remember thinking and speaking that way, and it makes me sick. I remember saying stupid things like that while inwardly I was listening to my own words and wondering, "am I really this f*cked up?" Then I would change the subject. The programming was beginning to unravel.
