While beliefs between the Mormon church, the cult off-shoots and the JWs are different, there are similarities in how members are coerced to believe, obey and not question.

I'm addicted to the show for this very reason. Even before i made the decision to leave, I could see the similarities. It is amazing how the show captures those unique feelings of those inside. The ending of last season really struck home. The wives being outed by the husband, (mostly against their better judgement) and then grabbing hands, them against the world. They acted against their best interests for their beliefs, something JW's do daily, then they band together to feel like it's okay.

As far as Bill is concerned, I sort (sort of) like the character in season one, but he really just acts selfishly and then uses his beliefs to justify his actions. I will enjoy watching it all crumble in the end.

We get it through Netflix. I enjoy it,,so many similarities. They have "The Principle" and JWs have "The Truth." This, at all costs, in spite of their insanities. Power and control (again at all costs) in religions and sects is evident. Extreme struggle for their teenagers. Main character, Bill, getting into total control and power drives. Wives, going crazy, but still loyal.

I luuuhv Big Love. So few people i know in RL watch it. Can I have a "Squuee-lets gab on where the show is going moment?-

Okay, so last season and this season seem so different, doesn't it?. Nicki is so out of it and I'm actually tired of her daughter's storyline; if they axed her or made her run away it would probably be better for Nicki altogether. I don't care about her dead daddy, don't care about the child growing in Nicki's mothers uterus, or if Caroline ever found out about it. I don't care and I simply can't. Last season is over; move on. Make that girl run off to 'discover herself or something'. I feel the same way about Ben (Bill's son) His storyline seems over; the eldest daughters are now gone and he's still there for what reason?

Alby I feel for, but I then don't as well. He's not the villain that Roman was nor can he be; we know too much about him and have been in his head too much. We're sympathetic to the monster he's becoming I guess because we know how tortured and effed he really is. Re: last night's episode? That look he gave that kid last night after they tried to Blackmail the Grant family; don't know if the writers were conveying "Gay Sex Stare' or what and the next meeting between that low life-guy and Alby could be interesting 'cause I know he wants Bill's head on a stick bad.

Margene; she seems too stupid right now, like forced to be stupid for a really lame plot- that I don't know what to think. She was a smart savvy businesswoman last season and made so much money and was financially independent and now she's involved in an obvious pyramid scheme? And I'm surprised that no one around them has caught onto it and saved her from it? Her being 16 and marrying Bill does seem like a fun storyline and I don't mind that one bit.

Barb's storyline isn't bad either and I'm liking her; she's always been the one I connected with out of all of these characters.

Bill? I can take or leave Bill. He used to be an interesting character and last season I was all behind him but now I'm tired of him and I'm tired of the whole polygamy deal altogether as if thats the only reason he wanted to become a Senator in the first place; but that is all he has going on for him. The Casino is gone, sadly and the store is not doing so well. If it all fell down, I think that'd be the most important thing to see. His losing everything because it can't continue like this.Dealing with his mom has been interesting but he hasn't really dealt with it; his wives have.

And more importantly, I suspect that Barb will be the one to leave the marriage altogther where she is headed and I'm liking this.

    Okay I'm done!

Can I say that I'm surprised she watches it to begin with with all the adult content. I guess being married to a 'wordly' person has worn away her spiritual armor!!!!! But I have to admit if she's aking these connections and responding that way thats the best thing ever for you. Most Jws when they see that stuff can't make the connection whatsoever; so I can't relate. To everyone else, Jwsare a cult. But to Jws they are in a 'sect'... because thats what they've been told they are.

Our family's reaction is that last season wasn't that great and the final season isn't shaping up to be any better.

I was a little disappointed in last season, what with the casino and all and there are plot holes right and left. Continuity is a problem. They'll bring up some big revelation in one episode and then the next it's like it didn't happen.

Despite that though, I'm drawn to it because of the cult aspect. They've nailed the actions and reactions and results of different methods of dealing with it. And while some scenes are over the top and seem too far from a normal perspective, it does bring the viewer into their world enough to be come emotionally attached to their situation.

Like a few others, I'm disliking Bill more and more. He's a small time Roman Grant. He's fashioning himself to be the prophet of his own cult. He's started his own church, he's trying to use his political power to bring polygamy back and now he's had a vision. By the time this thing is through he'll create his own compound and he'll be right back where he was kicked out of except he'll be the top dog running things. A fitting ending that I'm hoping for anyway. I don't want a happy ending where they're accepted into mainstream society.

(spoiler alert - if you haven't seen the newest episode)

When Bill was in the hospital and was asleep, I said, "he's going to have a Joseph Smith type vision and it's going to push him even further into thinking he's chosen to lead this righteous cause. No different than any other religion. How can you prove that he's just dreaming up shit and it's not from God?" I was taking a chance editorializing on "any religion" but I just had to get that dig in there. And sure enough, Bill had his vision...

Reading about Mormon esacape's was what enlightened me. When people at the KH found out I was reading a certain book about it, I was told not to read it because it would weaken my faith. It is obviously well known there are similarities. I hope she continues to watch and doesn't push away.

Can I ask how you have been working at getting her away from a JW lifestyle?

Part of it was luck. We were irregular and missing meetings and service. I was starting to question and she was moving up in her job. Working overtime kept her away and I just quit going. As I saw the oppurtunity to fade, I encouraged her when she showed interest in travel, hobbies, further education to further her career. Meeting attendance went from once a week to once every couple of weeks to once in awhile to memorials.

She's inactive but still hasn't broken free from the guilt or allowed strict criticism of the religion. Yet, she has made new friends in the "world" and is quite popular in her new sets of friends. She fits in in almost any situation...except holidays. Even then she'll partake and join in up to a point and then will back away and wait for the occasion to subside before interacting again. She has some significant cognitive dissonance in this area. We've gone to xmas parties, b-day parties, halloween parties yet she won't say happy b-day or merry xmas or happy new year even.

For the most part, it's been a slow, but mostly steady, progress. At times there are flair ups of displeasure in my stand on not having anything to do with it, but for the most part it stays unspoken of. The crack is there, it just needs the right wedge driven in to widen it.

Wow, that sounds like you really have done well. I think I have looked at your story before and I thought you were having trouble with getting her to retreat and then you had to go back, but I must be thinking of someone else.

Your wife sounds alot like me except I was fine with doing all of the forbidden JW things and never looked back. But I like working and trying to advance my career, travel for work once in a while and the social stuff is very fun and enjoyable too. She sounds like she will be ok eventaully.

Does she ever get mad at you to never have anything to do with it and attempts to go back? Does she feel guilty for not going?
