Having been an elder for over 30 years I know that there are many that feel the same way. They are scared to let too much out. Although not an elder anymore I am still afraid because of all I have to lose. People that are really deep in the organization and see the light have it really tough if they have family in. It will take some several years to get completely free if ever. I remember reading of the elder that professed to be annointed and what he went through to get his family out even a lawsuit. So please have patience with us we are really having a tough time of it. stuck in

    Jookbeard,

I can only tell you that the father and son are real people. Can I say that events took place exactly as they've described them? Of course not - I wasn't there.

But for just a moment, put yourself in Shadow Elder's position. You want to tell your son about how you really feel. You want his support. You really want him to get an education while he is still young. You don't want him to waste his life away. You are out in the car one day, all by yourself. Mom's not there, brothers are not there, no other JWs are there. Just you and your son. Here's your chance to share your secret.

How would you have handled that opportunity? Yes, I agree that some of the events seem just a bit too easy, but remember - it's not the father telling the story about how he shared his secret. It's the son who tells the story. He admits that his father was troubled, uncomfortable, reluctant. The son also admits that he didn't really believe what his father was telling him - it just seemed so out of character for his dad to admit to something that far out.

So, while you have every right to question the credibility of anyone's story on this site, just take a moment and think about how you would have handled the same situation. I believe these two stories - because I've had other contacts with both the father and the son. They are real.

I think it is ironic that some people on this site can not believe the personal stories of some of the contibutors here - and yet they accepted the teachings and leadership of the Watchtower and its governing body for years without question.

Jook, every one that comes out has to come out of the cult in the way that is most comfortable for them. Let's face it, Shadow Elder and his son are still in the JW religion. They haven't left yet. But their story tells you why they haven't left yet. They want to - they really do. But they just can not imagine the pain of losing their relationships with their other family members. That reluctance is very understandable and far more realistic than someone who has an ephiphany one day and then tells their family and JW friends to F*** off the next.

Black Sheeps suggestion sound really good. i would definately think the best approach was to test the waters and see what happened, beginning with the two unbabtized brothers. i hope we get to hear from them again.

Juan, suggest them to install firefox on whatever computer they use and install a plugin so no history, cache or personal information is kept.

Bohm - I think their computer problem is that they only have one, it's in the living room or den at home, and it's hard to get on it privately for very long. I think the WT made a suggestion like that - not letting the kids have computers in their rooms where they could be out of sight and maybe able to access porn. I get the impression that the household has been run very theocratically and mom keeps a watchful eye.

I think their plan is to try to get the support of the two unbaptized brothers. That would then put them in the position of outnumbering mom 4 to 1. Dad could pull rank on her eventually. Maybe the older son would find shunning his whole family too painful, and at least give them a listen, and then maybe being won over eventually. If they all DA, (although the dad might be DF'd for apostacy considering his article, if they ever found out that he wrote it), mom might just go inactive being outnumbered and not wanting to lose her family.

If I remember right, Shadow Elder Sr. mentioned that he had to go to the library on his lunch hour to send his article to me. I got the distinct impression he did not send it from home. So Firefox would not be a solution to their problem, I'm afraid. Maybe they could both get iPad or Droid phones and send their emails from them, but trying to type out a long story on one of those small virtual keyboards could be labor (and time) intensive.

    Personally i believe the story...

all to often we doubt the people who relate their experiences... are we on the level of troll alert as they are on apostate alert?

Thats not healthy to us or those who lurk.

Are we so jaded with the WT 'stories' that we can't trust those who want to exit either?

whats wrong people? are some of you waiting for another Ray Franz to write a book with real scans to prove authenticity?

Does the guy have to put up a facebook photo or something?

At least its not some fruit cake story about aliens and the Illuminati. THAT is what rips up our credibility, not an ordinary experience.

Juan Viejo, if you would be so kind to suggest something I feel is VERY important (hopefully Brothers "Shadow" and "Shadow Junior" are reading!!!)

I HIGHLY suggest reading the Steven Hassan books first before proceeding with telling the other family members. Steven Hassan is a cult-exit counselor and helps everyone understand the process of getting your loved ones OUT. "Combatting Cult Mind Control" and "Releasing the Bonds".http://www.freeminds-store.com/books/combatting-cult-mind-control.html

Also, the poster Open Mind wrote a page of suggestions on getting your spouse out... and if I am not mistaken, he started his journey as an ELDER, too!!! http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/jw/friends/183916/1/For-Active-JW-Men-Ideas-on-Awakening-Your-JW-Spouse-Long-post

I wish you the best with all of my heart.

    Love,
    Baba.

    Baba Yaga-

    Thanks for the suggestions...

Shadow and Jr. ARE reading this thread and tell me that they are loving it. Hopefully they will take your suggestions and discover better ways to approach Mom and their siblings.

I personally think that they are on the right track. Hopefully when they succeed and decide to leave the Kingdom Hall behind forever, they both will come on this site and share their story in person with you all.

In the meantime, I'm asking them to keep me up to date and share stories about their successes and failures.

Shadow repeated what he said in his story: They will leave when they are ready and on THEIR schedule. Not the WT's or ours.

They are hoping that something the WT does or some other external incident occurs will provide them with the opportunity they are hoping for. Maybe the WT will predict something for 2014, or disband the GB and appoint some single man as commander-in-chief, head honcho, or "FaithFul, the Discreet Slave/Master". It could happen.
