What i understood on this topic during the 50`s -70`s was that" in the beginning God created the heavens and earth"Gen 1:1 (That is the universe we see through technological advances we have today) That could have been aeons ago ,millions of yrs or billions of yrs ago.What followed then is when God turned his attention to creating life on earth,and that is where the 7000 years for a creative day originated for the preperation of this planet for human habitation Gen 1:2 onwards. The time of creation to the flood approx.2000 yrs,from the flood to the appearance of christ approx 2000 yrs,another 2000 yrs brings us to approx the year 1975,give or take a few months.Thats what I was led to beleive all those years ago,and I tried to instill it in every one I met for 33 yrs.
