Interesting that in page one of Hawking's new book he claims that philosophy is dead. I'm hoping to keep this unread for my doctor's appointment next week, but it's not looking good.

Curse you Amazon for getting my book here faster than I expected even though I picked 'super saver' shipping!

Within Dan Barker's review of the new book. . .

"Since time is a dimension, it no more needs a "beginning" than any other dimension . . . what is the "beginning" of any of the three spatial dimensions? Ancients would have thought that the earth was flat and had an edge, so what kept the water from falling off? But we now see things better than that, through better models . . . and it all comes down to mental models."

I am sorry to say that I cannot see any scientific point here, or really any philosophical point either - other than some contraversial public remarks by an old man who is not actually a contributing physicist any longer.
