You don't have to "hide" them if you put them in a key safe with some combination that you will easily remember, but others won't know:

I no longer have a dog, but when I did the spare key was in her doghouse. Normally a very nice golden lab mix, but she would have eaten any stranger that got within reach of the zipline.
