I agree with Terry. THEY don't want you enjoying your potential. They want you to be a non person. It's all well planned and deliberate.

The WTS explicitly preaches that individual character is unimportant; just the follow rules.

There is no room for individuality.

Except for the color of the tie you wear.

    Drones...

Spot on. It is about the destruction of the individual. Why is everyone's worth judged by the hours they put in, or their attendance record? As I was working on my car today, a JW who was working on a house not far from mine wandered over and said, "Hi, whatcha doin'?"

*out of breath* "Rotating my tires."

    "Oh that's good."

"Yeah, there's some uneven wear on this one right here."

    "Uh huh..."

Guy looks around for a minute.

    "We miss you."

    "Ehhhh...."

This was something of a groan from me. I turned away and went to the other side of the car to work. He said nothing else and walked away.

If he really missed me, why didn't he call? Meeting attendance was all that really mattered.

Terry - SPOT ON with this post. The organization ALWAYS felt like a corporate drone hive connected at different levels to the brain trust that is in New York. Self-expression as a simple beard , even though it was used HEAVILY in ancient times by christian and jews alike, its STILL wrong to do so in the congregation, not because each individual chose to do so, but because a policy was handed down from the top. There's no such thing as free-will and personal decision making in an organization that says unless you follow all these absolute rules perfectly you're not "good".

asphereisnotacircle - OH MY WORD!! You read my mind!!! I took that personality test one time for work and it was one of the worse feelings in the world. To feel so empty and blank.. just a cog for a business entity to use.

SirNose586 - You won't believe how many times I've gotten into arguments with my brother about counting numbers and being marked present at the kingdom hall. Those have to be the ONLY markers of spirituality in the organization. Not you trying to be a good person, or helping friends in your neighborhood, its how many hours you put in preaching and how many meetings you didnt miss.

This is also why they are so strict against things like smoking. No, I am not recommending anyone to start smoking--or to not quit smoking if you already do. Smoking is a destructive and wasteful habit, and has no known benefits.

However, when you take it out of the "stupid" category and place it into the "wicked" category, you are effectively treating the person as if you own them. They have no right to ruin their own lungs because that would reduce what the washtowel can get out of them. Also, the money wasted on cancer sticks should be better wasted on the Worldwide Pedophile Defense Fund. This prevents the person from choosing how they wish to waste their money--because, effectively, the money belongs to the Washtowel Babble and Crap Slaveholdery and not the individual.

Another case could be brought about gambling. This, unlike smoking, is not always destructive. A person can gamble sensibly. Suppose I have $50 to spend on entertainment, and decide to spend that $50 at a casino instead of a fast, good-tasting poison place or a movie. I strictly set that $50 as a budget to gamble, and end up going home having spent it all and winning nothing. I am no worse off than I would have been had I spent that same $50 elsewhere. Plus, there is a small chance of walking out of that casino with significant winnings, and a bigger chance of winning some of that $50 back. It is my money to spend at the casino.

However, the Washtowel doesn't view that as my $50. It is, instead, their $50. If I waste it at a casino, they get pxxxed. But, if I waste the same $50 on gas for field circus (where I have zero chance of winning several thousand dollars), that's what I was supposed to have done with it. They would rather I waste $500 on a Grand Boasting Session, instead of spending that same money gambling.

Additionally, I have never heard of a casino or tobacco company protecting pedophiles and silencing the victims with the money.

They destroy your empathy one step at a time. First you must look at all non JW's as less than human, not deserving of life and happiness, simply because they do not listen to the Bible's (WT's) message. Then you must suppress your own compassion and sense of what's right by purposely shunning someone who is a friend or loved one. And you do all of this with feelings of righteousness, because you are doing what a God of love and justice wants.

I remember one time a CO, in talking about how some feel it is against our human nature to participate in the discipline a df'd person needs, said that "it is not our (meaning the WT) thinking, it is God's thinking, This is what God wants". So, I guess you could say we are 'sociopaths for God.'
