JWs arn't the only religion that is a bunch of crap, but many of them are still growing. Mankind has always been without an answer to his existance and uses the books of certain inspired men to entrap them into their thinking. I don't think the internet will cure this. The WT's group will continue like the others.

I don't think any of us believe the Internet is going to end the WTS existence. But it has, is, and will continue to contribute to it's being an ever more marginalized doomsday cult. At the same time this group is fighting in courts worldwide to gain legitimacy and become an official part of the world's religious system (hypocrisy, anyone?), the Internet is exposing it as an extremist mind-control cult. Someone within the past couple weeks here posted the great quote from Star Wars: (paraphrased) "the more they tighten their grip, the more people will slip through their fingers."

It is more of a problem for those on their way in. But, for those on the way out, they would have left either way. This just goes to show what happens when you come up with a consistently crap product--before long, you are going to hear a lot about how lousy it is, and very little good about it.

On the other hand, if it was a sound product, you would hear a small number of bad comments about it and mostly praises for it. And the praises would be much more substantial than the negative comments.

Sweden is said to be in the absolute top countries with private Internet-access.
It firmly exploded about 4 years ago.
Now virtually every household has 2mbit+.

    JW Sweden Baptist stats:
    2007 481
    2008 402
    2009 312!

What does it say to us? except for the significant drop...

Shall we compare Sweden and US
    JW/baptist ratio

    US 1.096.502 pubs / 34739 bptzd = 31.6 Witness to accomplish 1 Bptzd.
    SWE 22.054 pubs / 312 bptzd = 71.8 Witness to accomplish 1 Bptzd.

It is very hard for them to find new JW:s here...

could it have something to do that it is so easy to find information nowadays?
That the most swedes read english fluently?
That sweden has very much information out at internet from x-JW:s in swedish language?

I dont know.. but something it is...

The internet is not the worst thing that could happen to the org. That would be an armageddon where they find out that they've been batting on the wrong side all along and that hell really is a place of eternal torment.

Here's some rambling thoughts in no particular order.

The internet will only have an affect on recruitment and retention where it is available. Despite increasing penetration in developing/3rd world countries, access is pretty well skewed to the richer countries. As was pointed out earlier it is thse countries that the organisation primarily relies on for it's revenues.

Age too will play a role. My mother is 73 and has been a witness for 30 years. She's never used a computer and never will. As this older generation dies off they will be replaced by a younger generation more disposed to using the internet, and in so doing finding ideas and information in conflict with current teachings.

I read an Awake piece the other day about thr dangers of the internet. They focused exclusively on pornography (almost unavoidable apparently) and marital breakup. Funny how they didn't mention that it's a place full of apostate sites that might wake a witness up from their slumber.

I seem to remember years ago looking for the official jworg site. I seem to remember them having a placeholder site. This gave no information as they do now but basically said 'we've got this domain name. We are the witnesses. If you want further information contact your local Kingdom Hall or national office. By the way, anybody else claiming to be the real JW site are a bunch of apostates'. When did this change and the organisation start to use a site designed to encourage visitors?

The worst thing that could have happened to the Watchtower is... the Watchtower.

Let's face it: They're their own worst enemy. Their own brainlessness and heartlessness is what has hurt them the most and will ultimately be their complete downfall unless there is schism or reform. "Apostates" and the Internet are merely collateral damage.

In a way, JW's are like Microsoft, always trying to make older versions of themselves jive with the latest. They both tend to crash a lot when under stress. They have a lot of bugs. And at the end of the day, both MS and JW's say "We've never been better."

    I prefer Apple.
