from the 21st Century King James Version (biblegateway)

2 In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

for some reason this verse keeps coming into my mind. Perhaps its the time of year

Any ideas on what Jesus could possible mean?

Mansions= dwelling places. Right now, Jesus is preparing a place with the Father for those who are trusting in Him. Jesus is telling those who will listen to have the same belief/faith in Him as they have in Jehovah. BTW, John ch 14 is one of the most important passages in the NT. Entire books have been written on this passage.

    Yours truly,

    Tom

I think that he meant that in his fathers house (the New Jerusalem) in heaven (above the universe) their are many beautiful large sized homes for believers.

    Here's some further guessing

    Hi QL,

for some reason this verse keeps coming into my mind

Say hello to the Holy Spirit :)

This is one of my favorite chapters in the bible

    John 14 (New International Version)

    J esus Comforts His Disciples
1 "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going." It is pretty straightforward. Trust in God and Jesus. He left to prepare a place for His disciples. He is coming back and the the place He is preparing will come down out of heaven also Revelation 21
Jesus the Way to the Father
5 Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"

6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him."

Thomas asks a fair question. Jesus makes it clear, He is going to the Father and the only way to get there is through Him. If you know Jesus, you know the Father.

8 Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us."

9 Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?

Jesus makes it clear, if you see Him you have seen the Father.

10 Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. 12 I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Ask Jesus for what you need, for the Godly desires of your heart Psalm 37:4 and have faith in Him.

    Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit
15 "If you love me, you will obey what I command. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. Jesus has left but He is with us and in us through His Holy Spirit. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him." Jesus is leaving but will come to us via His Spirit, the Holy Spirit. Obey Jesus' commands and you will be loved by the Father and the Son.

22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, "But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?"

23 Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

Once again, obey Jesus' teachings, not the WTs, not Charles Taze Russell's, not Joseph Smith's, only those of Jesus.

25 "All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

The Holy Spirit will teach you everything and remind you of Jesus words. He is doing that already :) His peace confirms this Galatians 5:22

28 "You heard me say, 'I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. 30 I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me, 31 but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me.
    "Come now; let us leave.

JWs major on these last few verses. However, they have either neither read or understood this chapter Philippians 2

    Happy Christmas :)

    Blessings,

    Stephen

Jesus understood what would be happening to his disciples after his death and wanted them to understand how special they were, how special ANYONE is that trusts In Jesus as they trust in God.

He states that he goes and will preprare a palce for them with Him and that he will came for them so they may be with him in his Father's house.

Most directly Jesus us telling his disciples that they will be with him, eventually, in heaven.

Perhaps indirectly he is also stating how those that trust Him as they Trust God will also be there since there are "many rooms".

The fact the Jesus said that he would have told them is their WEREN'T many rooms gives the notion that these "many rooms" serve a special purpose for Jesus and God. The "many rooms" can be viewed as if there are palces for all those that believe but are distinct in how they show that believe, obviously the apostles have "their special place" in the hosue of God, as would people who died for God as would those that "simply" believed.

I don't think it means that anyone is more special than any other, Jesus said that "the firts shall be last and the last first" and said that people will see many of al tribes and also said that the greatest amongst Us will be the least, etc.

All this to show that while there are special ones amonbst us, they will not be viewed higher than the rest.

I always thought it was a prophetic reference to justify the WTBTS real estate portfolio.

    thank you all -

just took a peek at the word translated mansions and as Thomas 15 said it means dwelling places. Interestingly it comes from the root ΜΕΝÕ which means remain, wait for. I think this adds to the meaning and somehow suggests that these dwelling places are waiting to be utilized.

And I can agree that these verses, regarding divine things, would have been very uplifitng to his disciples.

thank you snowbird - the word translated orphans is almost exactly like the greek

Ουκ αφασω υμας ορφανους, ερχομαι προς υμας

    orphanous
