@ Robdar, apart from the part about house burning and beatings, everything you said about the Russian Orthodox church could be said about Jehovah's Witnesses;
- oppressive
- intolerant
- hateful
This may be but there are degrees of oppression, intolerance and hatefulness. The Orthodox win hands down.

Honestly if they allowed the JW's to exist peacefully the JW's will eventually burn out on their own. This type of persecution only feeds the cult. They feel they are right by it.

Russia is a very different place.
In my opinion, something that really bothers the Russians is that JWs are a foreign religion, an American religion. It's literature and direction comes from New York and Western Europe. Believers are to put the direction of leaders in America over obedience to local government and family and community ties. They are not to be trusted.
And they bring in these American and Canadian attorneys that don't speak Russian. What do these slick foreigners know about Russia, it's history, it's national interests?

Knowing the two Canadian lawyers fairly wll I admit to snickering at their experience. For John Burns not to even have a chance to say a word...that is amazing since he usually has more to say than most. Shane thinks of himself as untouchable and god's gift so for him to be roughed up a bit would do him good.
Only trouble is this situation just makes him more of a hero in the eyes of the Witnesses. It will only increase his god complex
