British researchers are heading to a remote part of western China to try and unravel one of archaeology's most puzzling mysteries.

They plan to find out why the same sacred symbol has been found in apparently unconnected ancient sites around the world.

Academics have long been baffled as to why the circular motif became prominent in Christian, Islamic and Buddhist cultures separated by such great distances and times.

In each place the depiction of the hares, chasing each other in a circle with the ears touching each other's heads, is virtually identical.

A British research team, led by an archaeologist, will travel to the town of Dunhuang in the western Chinese province of Gansu next month to examine caves which might shed light on the mystery, the report said.

More than 1,000 years ago, Dunhuang was a key staging point on the Silk Road - the famous network of trading routes which linked China with Central Asia and Iran with branches into Tibet and South Asia.

in many locations the Three Hares are positioned directly next to the Green Man - another symbol best known for its links to paganism . The Three Hares and the Green Man always appear in prominent places in the churches, such as the central rib of the chancel roof, or on a central rib of the nave. This would suggest that the symbols held greater significance to the church, and casts doubt on the theory that they were the builders' signature marks. [1]

The earliest occurrences appear to be in cave temples in China, which have been dated to the Sui dynasty (6th to 7th centuries). The Three Hares also feature in 'roof bosses' (carved wooden fixtures) in the ceilings in almost 30 medieval churches in Devon, England (particularly Dartmoor), as well as churches in France and Germany, in 13th century Mongol metal work, and on a copper coin, found in Iran, dated to 1281.

What do you think the symbol of the Three Hares really means? Any gut feelings about it?

Why do you suppose it is found in conjunction with the Green Man?

Ah yes Cameo the "Rabbit Trinity". It has to do with the illuminati "Bugs bunny" cult...they were at war with the Elmer-fuddites in the 4th century.

Surviving remnants of an ancient religion. The rabbits symbol seems to follow the Silk Road eastwards. It vaguely reminds me of the triskelion.

Unrelated, but since you like these things, you might find the "wild hunt" interesting, now that I think about it, Cameo.

BTS: "Surviving remnants of an ancient religion.

Don't be so sure. There are messages in art. Messages that are subtle but poignant when deciphered. Things too dangerous to be spoken are hidden in symbols. Art is a language all it's own.

What "survives from ancient religions" may include warnings to us that concern the religions of today. Perhaps this is the manifestation of how the "dead will rise." Perhaps they are speaking to us through the old remnants they have left behind through art, architecture, and archeology. Not to mention old manuscripts as well.

Many things are finally coming to light. Many of these things have been hidden or obscure. Until internet, many people may not have heard of nor seen most of these things. It is only when we can put all these pieces together that they begin to form meaning and an understanding which transcends the object itself.

There is a universal language that weaves its way in myth and psyche. No need to invoke conspiracies to understand that bare fact.
