What would you serve as a substantial snack food for mid-afternoon?

I am not looking for anything formal like tea and crumpets.

I am not looking for prissy stuff like raw carrot sticks.

I am not looking for something expensive like fancy wine and cheese.

Not looking for anything really really sweet, either.

I am looking for man-food....like maybe something that would go with deviled eggs. IDK!

    Any suggestions?

the small hotdogs in a bath of bbq sauce

    bite size pizzas

    buffalo wings

...the kind of stuff you'd see at a Super Bowl party, in other words.

    Those are good suggestions.

Any ideas for something that would not have to be served hot?

Bacon! No man will turn down free bacon.

Does it go well with deviled eggs? Hmm.. I don't know, but it is bacon.

Maybe get some baconnaise to go with the bacon, then you could have bacon flavored bacon for that extra bacony kick.

Thin slice of hard salami, smeared with a mixture of poupon mustard & cream cheese. Lay a pencil thick slice or 2 ,of red or green bell pepper on and roll up. Peppers have been cheap here lately!

Hmmmm, you'd want to avoid any non-preserved meat if you'll have things at room temp. You don't want to do a meat and cheese platter due to the cost, so salami and hard cheddar are out. How about a loaf of that Hawaiian Bread that is hollowed out and put spinach/artichoke dip inside. People take the cut up bread and some of the dip and it is REALLY good and not too expensive.

    Rebirth...that sounds good.

Is the spinach artichoke dip commercial or homemade?

    Do you have recipe?

Is there any kind of good dip or spread recipes you can make with eggplant?

If so, what kind of bread would be good with that?

    Thanks.

Knorr vegetable soup mix has a great spinach dip recipe, I just made it today, and it's easy. Another one that's a big hit, and easy, is you take like, four blocks of cream cheese, press them together, chill, and top w/ cocktail shrimp and cocktail sauce. If cocktail sauce is expensive, mix some ketchup, horseradish and lemon juice, and you have a reasonable facsimile. Serve w/ crackers. Gonna go downstairs and grab some spinach dip for a snack

Little smokies on toothpicks w/ bbq sauce and mustard also rock.
