Well if things get really bad know who your local Mormons are..... some of ours have YEARS worth of provisions.

What makes you think they would be willing to share with those who are not of their own faith?

    Cameo-d,

As we saw on 9-11, anything is vulnerable to people who are bent on finding a way to cause harm. The power grid, at least, is made of very simple structures and cable. sub-stations and distribution stations are basically made up of transformers, uninsulated cables, and insulators. Transmission towers are out away from most population centers, and sub-stations etc. are not large structures that would cause any great damage. So, if terrorists do attack any of these locations, they will cause a nusiance, some harm, lost time and money ... but not lasting or serious harm.

The advice above that someone gave to buy a home generator is very good. Also, try to update one's home to be more efficient, or even have passive systems like solar panels. For communications, we can also have battery back-up ... like plugging the cell phone into one's car battery using the lighter. There is much we can do to minimize the impact of power disruptions, whether they are caused by people or nature.

Animals do quite well without the Internet, electricity, or heating systems. I watch geese here in northern Wisconsin all winter long (one large group of several thousand stopped migrating south about ten years ago). We just had our 3rd coldest winter on record. The geese and seagulls along the lake don't seem to give a damn about being in -40F with windchill. Everyday, I watched how these birds walked out on the frozen ice shores, about 200 yards over the lake. How did they do it? How do they eat? Likewise the Deer hang out all winter and survive.

Somehow, I think we humans can find ways to survive well without having to rely on electricity. We are, afterall, almost as smart as geese.
