There was a "demonstration" at the District Convention in either 2007 or 2008 where Joe Dub had his laptop up on stage and acidentally got onto a site critical of JWs. He immediately shut it down. He even closed the laptop. All the seal flippers in the audience went apesh*t.

Anti-JW sites are just like porn sites. Just say no.

    (And pass the Kool-Aid).

This is a great find and I'm sorry I missed this thread before! Interesting indeed.

"I can't prove it, but it seems very plausible that someone attempted a low-risk subversive message, and hoped it would get past whoever does peer review on the articles"

If bethel does monitor this site...what do you want to bet that this thread got them thinking. Maybe they revisited this sentance with the poor guy that wrote this in the first place, possibly gave him a little grilling as to why he used the verbage he did. Granted, he could be (or just play) innocent and say "hey, you guys checked it!"

    It is very strange though.....

This is an information war as much as a theocratic war.

No, I think you are reading more into this than there actually is. The Watchtower study article is basically "preaching to the choir" so to speak. Most Witnesses I know of would take it as a given that God's Holy Spirit will direct honest hearted individuals to click on the right link and learn the truth. If anything, I think it is simply telling the rank and file that there is no need to use the search engine since they already know the address to the official web site, and besides, they already know the "Truth."

I agree. I'm amazed at how much wishful thinking there is in this thread. Having been at Bethel for many years and having had friends in the Writing Dept., I can vouch for it that each and every article goes under intense scrutiny before reaching the presses. Not infrequently writers are asked to redo their articles because the higher-ups in the Writing Dept. or on the Governing Body think that a statement -- or more -- is a bit risky or contradicts the Governing Body's trend of thinking. Thoroughly-trained proofreaders also catch statements that might be misunderstood by the rank and file. And every writer knows he risks being bounced from the writing staff and even from Bethel if he dares to insert an idea that might suggest he has a tendency towards what the Society considers to be apostasy.

The article in question doesn't recommend in any sense that JWs go to the internet. It merely reports what someone on the outside of the organization did. If the intention was to suggest that JWs go to the internet, it gave "direction" as to where they should focus. Most JWs have been duped into thinking that God himself would be offended if they dared to venture elsewhere on the internet. That mindset alone guarantees that the majority are not going to misconstrue the article to mean that the Society is changing its view concerning the worldwide web.

There is something to this though...in December 96 I decided I was going to "prove" why Christmas was evil to all those chatroom cynics who opposed JWs! So I typed Jehovahs Witnesses into the search engine and up popped about (at that time) 400,000 web sites not the least of which was Randy Watters! So...guess what I started reading LOL...wasnt watchtower.org thats for damn sure. And that lead me to Rays book and that lead me to the library and that lead me to (finally!) DA!!

Sometimes all you need is a seed.

    >> LOL! Care to share how this is done?

Modify the HOSTS file on your computer.

    Windows Vista=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
    Windows XP=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
    Windows 2K=C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
    Win 98/ME=C:\WINDOWS

Open the "hosts" file and add this to the end of the file:

    161.58.8.133 www.MyPornSite.com

(Change "www.MyPornSite.com" to whatever site you want to capture and redirect)

Save the "hosts" file and you are done!
