I remember sometime back that on this forum, someone commented that GB member Losch gave a talk that equated going to college with committing suicide and that it had been captured on tape and circulated. Then the Society ordered that no one make private recordings of assembly parts, audio or video. Was this ever a published request, say in the KM?
A question: Did KM actually announce "no private tapings of assembly parts?

Is it all right to record public talks by the brothers and then sell duplications of such recordings to others?
With the advent of the portable tape recorder in recent years, many brothers are recording the talks they hear at assemblies, at Kingdom Halls and at special meetings. Sometimes these talks are played back to other members of one’s family, or to shut-ins and infirm individuals, or to other persons who were not present to hear the talk originally. Sometimes those making the recordings like to replay the tapes for their own enjoyment.
There seems to be no objection to recording such talks for one’s own pleasure or for the benefit of others who did not hear the talks. But what if one were to reproduce such tapes and then advertise them for sale among the brothers and thus promote a commercial enterprise? Sometimes individuals do this without even asking permission of the one who gave the talk. It is one thing to record a speaker’s talk; it is an entirely different matter to reproduce his talk and sell it to others, with or without permission. To sell such tapes puts the matter in the commercial field and this becomes a disturbing element in the congregations. It would therefore be good to avoid this unethical practice of selling tapes.

How should Jehovah’s Witnesses view tape recordings from sources other than the Society?
The Society provides an abundance of spiritual food in various forms, including cassette tape recordings. These include cassette recordings of the Bible itself and others based on Society publications, such as TheWatchtower,Awake!,MyBookofBibleStories, and ListeningtotheGreatTeacher. Kingdom melodies and several dramas have been produced. However, we need to exercise caution with regard to private tape recordings that circulate and that may appear to be similar in nature.Because of our being such a trusting brotherhood, some may at times accept and listen to copies of tapes from others without ascertaining their origin.
Sometimes recorded talks that circulate border on speculation or make use of sensational information. Would it not therefore be wise to follow Paul’s counsel at 2 Timothy 3:14? There Paul, after warning about impostors, stressed the importance of knowing the persons we are listening to. We need to make sure that we do not listen to anything that goes "beyond the things that are written" in the Holy Scriptures and in the spiritual food provided by "the faithful and discreet slave."—1 Cor. 4:6; Matt. 24:45-47.
In some areas tapes for teaching children the Bible are being advertised and sold. These tapes purportedly originate with brothers and have been circulated among some congregations. While the motive may appear to be good, would this not amount to using theocratic connections for personal advantage? (See OurKingdomService, June 1977, page 4, and December 1979, page 4; OurKingdomMinistry, September 1987, page 4.) Jehovah’s organization is providing more than enough Bible-based instruction to train our children. Therefore, we discourage the circulation of such tapes.
Some individuals may make tape recordings of congregation meetings or assembly and convention programs for their personal use. Such recordings may also be appreciated by members of the congregation who for some good reason are not able to be present at the meetings. However, these should not be made for distribution among the brothers in general or offered for sale to others. May we make full use of all that Jehovah has provided through his organization for our spiritual encouragement and upbuilding.

From the owner of jwproclaimers.org - the most prominent audio download site - in an email to me: "I have heard negative things from other Witnesses who are too conservative and take what was written too far. But if the branch said not to do it, I would do what Captain kirk said in Star Trek III when told he can't go to the genesis planet. He told sulu "He said no, therefore we shall go anyway." There are more important things than rules. There are people"

oompa: No notes, no recordings, no video tapeing! These were the instructions my father received for this elders schooling late 80ties. In fear of satans apostates. I thought that was the rule for all elder schoolings. Was that the same you received? fts

Another thing he told me was he told me that the DO, Co and Service committee had to give there ok in order for an elder to attend. He said, not all elders were invited. I mentioned the “no notes” because the topic reminded me of those instructions. Ha also mentioned the among the instructors were bethel-representatives! So I believe it was official...

The last time I attended an elders "School" would have been in the late 90's. The rule then was "no taping" of the school. I guess they did not want it played to non elders. But we were encouraged to take notes, and sometimes given dictation to write in the wide margin of the "Shepherding the Flock Book" I cannot see that notes would be discouraged, unless anyone has a specific experience of having that instruction.
The taping of Assemblies and meetings is generally seen as beneficial for those who cannot go, and for the dub to review the Assembly. But they would only want it to be for personal use or friends. The placing of it on YouTube was not the idea..

If someone wanted to make a commercial enterprise out of video/audio recordings they should tape three panting elders interviewing a cute 19 year old sister about the details of her sex life. "Sister Buxom, do you masturbate? How?....etc"

I remember some kids that were about 16 getting counseled for kissing....
And yet our own Circuit Servant was having sex with one of our single fair maidens while his wife lay ill in the hospital...(The fair maiden confessed...)
