About that flag you are flying...

My neighbors have had a flag hanging from their house since Sept 12. They are rather quiet people, not overly friendly but will say hello if I say it first. We live in the Pacific Northwest...Seattle area. It has been very wet and windy recently and I frequently look out to see the neighbors flag all wet and sometimes the wind blows it up so it's laying on the roof. This really bugs me. Why do people persist in flying flags in the rain? Isn't this a huge sign of disrespect? I know my neighbors and the hundreds of other people with wet flags don't mean to be disrespectful, but why do I know you aren't supposed to fly flags in the rain and they don't? I spent most of my life being offended by flags as a dub, and now I'm bugged that people are too lazy to bring them in when it rains.

    Am I wrong?

    Princess,

I do not have the answer, but I think a flag in the rain is better than no flag at all.

    Princess,

    Perhaps this will help?

    "Section 2

    (b) The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered cautiously.

    (c) The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all weather flag is displayed.

    (f) The flag should be displayed in or near every polling place on election days.

    (g) The flag should be displayed during school days in or near every schoolhouse."

I spent most of my life being offended by flags as a dub,
Why? If you were "offended by flags" it wasn't because the WTS taught you to be. They tried to impress upon your mind the importance of not being nationalistic, not being offended.

Well then, that settles it! I'm NOT going to work tomorrow because it's predicted to be inclement weather, and I'm sure more important than any piece of cloth.

Wait a minute, what am I talking about? I keep forgetting that I'm retired! That being the case, let it rain on the flag.

    Princess,

I think that it's great that the US people fly their flag so proudly. I can't help but notice that the Stars and stripes appear somewhere in the background whenever we see a news clip from the states.

You might be interested to know that since the WTC disaster, some UK homes show a US flag in the window with the logo "Support USA" included.

    Princess,

Most flags purchased commercially these days are all weather flags.

    FRIDAY,

NO, Witnesses are indeed taught to be offended by flags. You're own self importance is very telling.

Well, that helps. I didn't know an all weather flag was acceptable. It still looks horrible when it's all twisted and flopped up on their roof though.

Eman, that is nice to hear. We really do appreciate the support.

Flags improperly displayed on cars bug me....

    ------------------------
ยง175. Position and manner of display

The flag, when carried in a procession with another flag or flags, should be either on the marching right; that is, the flag's own right, or, if there is a line of other flags, in front of the center of that line.

    * (b) The flag should not be draped over the hood, top, sides, or back of a vehicle or of a railroad train or a boat. When the flag is displayed on a motorcar, the staff shall be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender.

    (Source: http://www.usflag.org/us.code36.html#173)

You can't always clamp it to the fender, but please put it on the right side of the auto.
