I have a GTI, and the manual says 91+ octane.

It's not wise to go against zee instructions of zee german engineers.

I could get the cheap stuff and it'd probably run fine, but I'd get a bit less power, and probably a bit less mpg, so it'd be a wash.

Yes ok then good. It is all about the compression ratio of your engine. Most stock Amercars are 8:1. Your higher performance engine is prolly more, requiring a higher octane to resist preignition in the higher compression.

My bad just trying to save you some cents alt

The last time I went to get gas, (petrol to everyone else,) they asked for my first born child. I told them I didn't have any children; so, they took my left testicle. I don't know what I am going to do next time.

    No worries.

The GTI has a direct injected 2 liter turbo, and I think the compression ratio is 10.5:1. I can average about 28mpg on my usual driving if I keep my foot from getting a bit too heavy.
