Gay Marriage - The War for Equality

The will of the majority cannot infringe on the rights of the minorities. Does anyone think that voting on racial equality would have passed ballot initiatives back in the 1950's, 60's, and 70's? Look at what the slavery issue did.

Bizzy Bee: Drafting laws are not that difficult. What is difficult is changing peoples attitudes. That does take many, many years of education, I will agree.

BTW, I was referring to you, because you posted many statements, I assume you agreed with them or you wouldn't have posted them. I didn't see any disclaimer on them anyways. You didn't actually answer one of my questions either, except to say that it was all just too "difficult". Lame cop-out IMO.

The legal fight for gay marriage has barely begun.

Right. Though if it is voted in in November, it could be a done deal.

Gay marriage is legal in Canada and has been for a few years already. So far, I haven't noticed any repercussions to anybody else's life or a disintegrating of society as we know it!

Actually, now that I think of it, we have had cross the board tax cuts up here all around. Ain't socialism grand!

Prolly several of your questions I didn't answer.

There, what was so difficult about that? It's only difficult if you want it to be difficult.

I believe you used the word "difficult." I then used the word as a summary of numerous concerns - the process is difficult or it would be done by now. I have nothing to cop-out about. I am only talking about the legalizaton process - not the moral rightness or wrongness of homosexuality.

I don't think you can vote on racial equality - it is just a fact. The Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964.

Look at what the slavery issue did.

The will of the people prevailed over slavery in 1865. We had to fight a war first.

Bizzy, I see you are fond of throwing out red herrings and getting into arguments about the meanings of common words to avoid answering tough questions put to you. Allow me to refresh your memory after all it was an entire page ago!

I feel the same, except to say that while I have no gripe with homosexuals practicing their preferences, I am not totally sure that gay marriage is a good thing for society.

And just because it would be nice for everyone to be treated equally, the fact is we are not equal

Frivolous - yes, frivolous - indulgent distractions are soon to be luxuries we cannot afford.

Those all sound like moral judgements to me!

I just have to point out that society has been chasing around this particular mulberry bush for quite some time without a resolution because it is that "difficult."

I believe you also used the term "fraught with dilemmas".

You are trying to change the meaning of your own words mid-argument because they are indefensible. Otherwise you would have defended them already by answering the questions I put to you.

    Cog,

I'm not sure what specific questions you want me to answer - I've given a blanket answer about the concept of equality, not just gay marriage.

I am not being dogmatic or morally judgmental to say that I'm not sure that the process is a good thing for society. The process can be very damaging - kinda like the Civil War.

It is self-evident that it is fraught with dilemmas.

You're right - I wouldn't go to war over gay marriage. I think we are facing much more challenging issues that deserve our resources and attention - people are literally starving and basic human needs for food, sanitation and medical care are not being met, putting lives at great risk. Maybe I don't take the rest of it too seriously. Sorry.

I'm glad you noticed it too. I was wondering why racial issues were so easy for Biz to identify with, solve, and explain away yet gay rights become this 'huge muddled issue' to Biz.
