What is the main difference between pumpernickel and rye? Aren't they the same?

Mom bought some pumpernickel bagels when I was a kid, I thought they were chocolate donuts, I tried it and it nearly caused me to puke.

I like peanut butter and jam on toast, but I can't have them together. One slice with peanut butter, one slice with jam and never the two shall meet.

Pumpernickel is very dark and doesn't have caraway seeds in it. Rye bread is very light in color and texture and has caraway weeds in it.

Good rye bread tastes good toasted with pure butter. It's good with ham.

Now you've got me curious, if I can stomach the thought, I would like to try them both again and compare the differences.

I used to pick the caraway seeds off of the assembly pizza when I was a kid, I thought they were gross too.

Anyway back on topic, how about a peanut butter and sliced apple sandwich?
