I think I would rather live in a society that guarantees freedom of expression and religion than one that legislates against it. There are many things that are annoying in life. But do we want to restrict other people's rights just to assure our own comfort? After all, some people are glad to have JWs, Mormons or Adventists call. Personally, I would rather take other measures such as requesting JWs not to call on my home any more or to put a sign up saying that JWs are not welcomed.

Personal freedoms are precious. We want to be sure we don't restrict the rights of other individuals just to convenience ourselves.

Wasn't there a case in the States where a city tried to pass an ordinance to prevent unsolicited visits?

This point is raised with him several times by callers, his rebuttal is simply signs do not work. In reality, we know they don't work as I'm sure we've all had experiences of witlessing with Brother or Sister Righteous who ignored those signs, whether it's no to call religious callers or shift worker asleep signs.

He doesn't have a problem with religious people, he's not saying to ban any religions, just unsolicited calls at your home.

Yes, the religion should be banned. Why? Because they defraud people, using high pressure sales tactics to deliver a scam. They get in for curiosity, and then learn that they have to do ever more. And then, once they are in, they have no way of getting out should things turn south later.

Like any other scam the witlesses should be illegal. Unlike things like drugs and porn (which are not scams), the religion is only a front. Drug users are usually aware of the dangers of their drug. Porn is also honest--the person knows what they are in for before buying. As such, I believe that those things should be legal.

Something is wrong when people are banned from using or selling drugs and/or porn, where people are aware of what is involved. And yet they are allowed to spread this cancer in the name of religion, where people are not generally aware of what is involved before getting in.

It would be better to start a drive to have people mail "Do Not Call" letters to their local kh's--no court cases, no bs--just no call.

I do not agree with banning a religion... what homeowners and the like should do is post on their doors that they do not want to be disturbed by any religious groups, and then the groups should respect their wishes. It should be a crime if any group knocks on a door if a sign is posted saying the tenant doesn't want to hear their crap.

dawg: In reality, would that actually work? How many witlesses ignore those signs anyway? I've known a lot. Shift worker asleep? Who cares, just knock anyways, wake them up then wonder why they're in a s***** mood with you.

BTW: I don't for a second think religious door knocking will be banned in Oz, but I would like to see the subject in the public arena for debate...

And apologies to Lehaa for hijacking your thread.

I recall being a newbie and how the elders would always vouch for certain doors because an intellect lived there who might give a newbie food for thought!

Its a pity really that more regular people dont have a few good anti WT thoughts to set JWs questioning their own questions!

I'm saying that they should be jailed for trespassing if they knock and there's a sign present. The tenant of the home is rejecting their message with the sign, they shouldn't be allowed to disrespect the tenant's wishes.

You surly don't agree with banning a religion?

I can't agree with the idea of banning their door to door ministry. I would be happy to see laws that strengthen the rights of individuals to bar Witnesses from coming to their door and punish them if they disobey. A lot of people don't even realise that Jehovah's Witnesses have a do not call list. Just letting people know about this is a good step. Here in the United States, there are do not call lists for telemarketers with legal penalties for businesses that don't respect it. I would like to see something similar for religious groups that knock on your door.
