MAgnesium and my migraine

Well, first off, to you whom suggested magnesium to me, thank you (I think)

My headaches have been a constant source of misery for me since my last desperate post regarding them. But I did start on the magnesium treatment. High dosis of the right kind (there are different kinds of magnesium ). Anyway, I have taken them for almost 2 weeks now. And they do say that it gets worse ... before it gets better.

Well today I def. had the worse part. Since I take preventative drugs for migraine the knock-on-the-door (also known as the visual aura) has not presented itself to me in a long while. Part of me did not like that, because an aura gives you fair warning and makes sure you can take neccesary action. On the other hand I was glad cuz no matter how bad it was, I always knew it could get worse...

Well, today after 30 minutes of being awake, my vision on the right became weird, Like a rainbow just outside my line of sight. Gradually becomming bigger until after 20 minutes the entire right side of my vision was compromised. Then, in the blink of an eye, it was gone. While the vision-blurriness was happening I fortified myself with water, meds, darkened windows and got into bed. Within 15 minutes after the aura was gone ... there came my monster stampeding into my skull.

So that was the *it got worse* - part. I am guessing it's the magnesium since I did not change anything else meds-wise. I will talk to my docter just in case tho, esp since it was a diffrenet aura than I used to have. Normally I'd got a lightning bolt in my left side of vision. This was totally different and was prettier.

But I am having a tiny ray of hope that it just might get better.

    Viv,
Have you google'd your preventative drugs + magnesium + side effects to see if there's any info on it? The mag might be interacting with the drugs your taking.

Serendepity, the medicine information does not mention magnesium as a harmful combination (it does not mention magnesium at all). Could not find any on the internt either. I take sandomigrain 4.5 mg a day as a prevention drug.

Hi Viv. I don't remember if I've responded to your headache threads before. How do you feel about acupuncture and massage? Acupuncture in an acute situ would be better than massage, but massage can help inbetween headaches. I have headaches from my auto accident two years ago, and acupuncture helps but does not last for more than a few days--for me. And I've noticed that massage during a non headache time, on the shoulder and neck muscles helps me too. Heat helps me also, so I often sleep with a heat pad on my pillow and wrap it around the side of my head or around the sife of my neck.

I'm just offering this as a varied arsenal is nice to have when dealing with a debilitating thing like migraines. Part of the whole migraine thing is that it messes with your ability to use your mind, so you really have to pre plan, and it looks to me like you've got that covered really well.

Next time I get needles stuck in my head, I'll send a smile your way.

Magnesium helped a friend of mine with migraines. It did not help me though.

The magic pill for me was Benicar ... after trying numerous prescription pills that specialist suggested. Still use Imitrex every once and a while.

I feel your pain and wouldn't wish migraines on my worst enemy. You sound like your migraines are more severe than mine but I thought that I would share one of my treatments with you. Like you mentioned I seem to be forewarned that a migraine is coming but sometimes I don't get the warning. So, if it gets beyond a certain point this is what I do: Get in the shower and turn the water to as warm as you can handle it. Relax in the warmth, then turn the water over to cold. Stand in it and shiver for as long as you can handle and then turn it back to warm. I do this five or six times in a row. It is deeply relaxing and seems to take the edge off of the migraine, sometimes to the point that I don't have to go to bed to sleep it off. I know that this sounds rather unenjoyable but it really seems to do the trick and is well worth the momentary discomfort.

I hope that the magnesium treatments lessen your migraines.

    Good luck,

    Sheri

I hope it works! One thing I thought was interesting lately. I started going to a chiropractor because 10 years of getting headaches in the back of my head and upper neck finally got to me. He took x-rays and showed me on the x-ray what had been doing it. several of my vertebrae were shoved to one side, compressing one of the blood vessels in the side of my neck. He said if it were compressed any more I'd be getting migraines. It was just something that made me think of you when he said that. Have you by any chance had your neck checked out? I can honestly say that one week of going to the chiropractor my neck feels the best it has in 10 years.

The magnesium may take awhile to start working. Sometimes if you're low enough the intestines lose the ability to efficienty absorb it and then it takes a magnesium IV or transdermal magnesium to build the body back up to where it can be absorbed orally again... just one of the quirks with magnesium.

Was the new aura like looking through one of those older kaleidoscopes?

I had that one night while watching TV..it was not too long after my husband died.

I went to the eye Dr thinking something terrible was happening to my eyes. He told me it was a migraine!

Not to scare you but he also told me if it was ever accompanied with a headache to get to the Dr.

I don't know what he meant but it never happened again..just that once. But it was enough to scare the pee out of me...

    Snoozy..
