Think about what young guy that has it made, his parents have money and they can easily afford to send him to any school is going to enlist? See the real snag in this.

I can tell you, personally and honestly, that all the young men that I know that have gone off to serve had reasonably well to do fathers. Not rich, but solid. I worked with one about 3 years ago that made 60K. He was my boss. His wife was a research scientist, I think it was in a biological field, and she made a good deal more. There was a family tradition of military service. The boy went to the Airforce. Several other coworkers had been in the Army or Marines. None were from poor families to begin with. I know this is just anecdotal, but many people believe a military career at least for a time is a great start in life. Not to mention there is always a sense of pride with having worn a uniform in their country's service.

    Cheers

    Burn,

That explains it "family tradition" I'm for traditions but this one needs a little work and more deprogramming from US propaganda.

It's interesting to me, that the folks that are generally Republican, Christian, Family Values touting types, are the ones so concerned that they will somehow give a buck or two to those who are undeserving. So often they are the ones that can most afford it too. I am much more inclined to worry about making sure that those who are deserving get the help they need, than to worry about the few who may take advantage.

Ahhh yes, well, because we are conscientious

I am rather inclined to think that it is more often due to being caught up in a pleasure seeking existence. For every mouth to feed there is also a brain to solve problems, and two hands to do work. It only takes a single genius to propel us to the next "level".

Yes I'm sure those in uniforms may be a great attraction to you, firemen, policemen, generals, it maybe what even gets your blood all a pumping, but a little more deep thought may be in order here.

Then give to a worthy charity beksbks. Or help someone in need yourself. Volunteer. Not only will you help another, you will enrich your life and embue it with purpose. Coercive redistribution through taxation accomplishes none of this. It only increases the power of the state. In the receivers it tends to create a sense of entitlement, and in those that are fleeced it breeds resentment. Incidentally, conservatives tend to give much more to charity than liberals. This is true even when we pull out what gets donated to religious charities. Religious charities however, do a great deal of good as well.

lol............Burn is probably the deepest thinker that has responded to this thread thus far. Maybe you're the one Frankiespeakin that needs to think a little deeper.

Maybe you've been reading too much anti-American propaganda and buying into too much of the bs spouted out there.

EDITED TO ADD: There is something called "balance".

Deprogramming? How? A nation whose citizens will not answer the call willingly is dead already. Ask not what your country can do for you.....

No need for personal experience when we have statistics.

I know this is just anecdotal

    Ah, alright then.

but many people believe a military career at least for a time is a great start in life.

Or an early end. Of what benefit to the soldier? That his family may get a pension? I'm sure they'd rather their son/daughter.

And I couldn't let this slide:

Being that Canada is a sister nation and is defended by the United States. I demand you retract your statement and apologize. I do not care that you bracketed your uncalled for insult in quotes. The intent of your comment was deeply offensive.

A sister nation? No, a sovereign nation. Defended by the United States? Tell me when was the last time Canada was defended by the United States in a war that threatened its sovereignty? I remember the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 where the government of the United States forcefully tried to coerce Canada into joining it. As far as I can tell from the history books, the only ever immediate true threat to it's sovereignty has been the United States, (including those crazy Fenian Raids of Disillusioned Irish ex-Confederates along the Niagara River). Now the international bankers are trying to merge the currencies and governments of North America into a North American Union. Again, these threats don't come from overseas, they come from agencies operating in the United States.

Canada is a member of NATO. Canada has its own coast gaurd, army, and air force. The fact that the government of Canada (with majority citizen approval) chooses not choose to send them into Iraq or other places that the government of the United States (without majority approval) has deployed theirs does in no way indicate a need to be protected. Perhaps it is a reason why the government of Canada does not need to spend a million dollars a second on the military budget. Wars of Aggression are avoided, pending territorial aggression.

Please remember that the NAFTA treaty specifies Canada send 60% of it's production south of the border. Without that, the United States would lose quite an influx of natural resources, including conventional and unconvential oil, and most of the natural gas that heats the New England states in the wintertime. Dependance is a two-way street. However, the advantage is on the side of the seller, and China and India would gladly make up for any lost profit suffered from American withdrawal in the Canadian market.

Deprogramming? How? A nation whose citizens will not answer the call willingly is dead already. Ask not what your country can do for you....

In some countries, the citizenry are in charge of making the decision to go to war. Or at the very least, like to be informed as to the reason for the call.
