Our earth is approx 4.5 billions years old our Galaxy and universe approx 15 billion years old the life span of the universe is approx 1 trillion years and yet if we are lucky we will live 70-80 years not even an eye bat in the river of time...As an Atheist I really don't know what is on the other side of death but something deep inside me tells me this is not IT...what is beyond IT I don't know. Are we here by chance, design or divine purpose and if so what is that purpose to live for such a short time just to die and transverse into another reality...makes you wonder...makes me wonder...

me too, but it also make me wonder what are the odds that WT thinks that out of all this time WE could be the ones lucky enough to never die, live forever etc when every other living thing in history has died......oompa

Good observations. Check out Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion for some thoughtful comments on the kinds of issues you have raised.

Do you think we're an evolutionary mistake? I mean, if natural selection produced a species that can say "Ya know, I think I'll just skip having kids", that's a problem, isn't it? People are aware of their short life spans, and may choose to spend it on themselves instead of reproducing.
Perhaps spirituality -- with its tendency to promote the idea of life after death -- was an attempt at tipping the scales more in favor of reproduction?
(All implied intent to be read in proper "mindless natural selection" terms)

Not really a problem as far a natural selection is concerned; in fact that is exactly what natural selection is. It doesn't matter the reasons why a species doesn't reproduce, it only matters that it doesn't. If it doesn't reproduce then it is unsuccessful and its failed genes are removed and its traits not selected for.

It's not a problem if there is a higher level evolution, as well, ie evolution on what may be called the spirit level. That is based on the premise that there is such a level.
Imo, the universe itself is an accident event in preexisting potential, a sort of lower level trancendent cradle, where all is calmness.

I ask the same questions as you do.
I dont know the answer. But an answer I have run across is. We are spirits having material experiences. We are conciousness inhabiting forms. As spirits in paradise there is nothing going on. When we get bored, we come here to the pleasure planet.
Thats my favorite unprovable theorie to go with all the other unprovable theories.

What if there is no such thing as death?
What if you are immortal spirit creature having a physical experience?
What if you made the choice to have this experience to learn some kind of lesson?.....to live out some kind of "Karma?"
What if the biggest illusion is...."that this is all there is?".........what if my friend?

What if this is it; and there is no other side. Would that change anything? nope! It might bring humans to a dead end; but as far as the rest of the universe is concerned, we don't matter anyway.
