Great article, it's no illusion or generation gap theory either.

Wizard is right, and ditto to Hortensia's experiences. One time I passed a group of young teen boys (16 age group) and said "Excuse me" so I could get by them, and they said, "There's No Excuse for You..." (and they were not joking, but were snarly and nasty).

Primarily it's the public school system, purposefully being used to do exactly that, dumb down the kids AND change their "world view" to that of a "good global citizen robot"; then add corrupt television programming; junk food; and idiot parents who don't have a clue what is really going on in the world. Those are the kids that end up the worse off. Parents with their eyes open usually do something about it, homeschool, private school, clean up the diets, limit the brain-drain and moral corruption of today's TV, etc.

I taught high school for 17 years before having a career change. It seems that we will always have high and low functioning people, but the average kid seems to be "dumbed down." They make fun of each other if someone tries to do well. Then, of course, all this self-esteem stuff came out. Goodness gracious, don't you know that child will be scarred for life if they fail your class. They're usually really nice kids but you really worry about their future.

If you want your kids to be bright and intelligent and educated, you have to do it yourself. You take your kids to the library, show them it's fun to pick out books and take them home and read them. Let your children see you reading all the time, and not just magazines, read books with no pictures in them! Turn off the television, and when you do watch it, point out the erroneous thinking. Just the commercials alone are full of things to discuss. If you love reading and get your kids to read, they will learn to love learning.
