Cat faeces 'may be killing whales'

The following correction was printed in the Guardian's Corrections and clarifications column, Friday August 31 2007

The article below should have referred to cat faeces, not cat litter, throughout. This has been corrected.

Pet owners who flush cat faeces down the lavatory may be responsible for the deaths of whales, dolphins and porpoises around Britain's coast, according to academics and public health experts.

They have found evidence of a common parasite in dead marine mammals and say family cats could be be the unwitting source. Cats are essential to the life cycle of toxoplasma gondii, which can infect most mammals and birds but only as part of the food chain.

The possible link to dolphin deaths has been raised by staff from Swansea and Glamorgan universities and the National Public Health Service for Wales in a letter to the Veterinary Record. They say that in California concern that cat faeces have contributed to sea otter deaths has led to disposal warnings on bags of cat litter. But little is known about infection in marine species around Britain.

Blood samples from dead stranded cetaceans revealed infection in one in 70 harbour porpoises, in six of 21 common dolphins and in the only hump-backed whale tested. Nearly one in eight Swansea University and health service employees admitted flushing cat faeces away.

I don't know what I was expecting- but FYI for anyone else, maybe eating Granola while watching this video isn't the best idea...

OMG misa! That was funny. Um...what are you feeding your cats? That was a lot of kiitty-poo poo.

Update to my cats' toilet training! All is going very well! Both are coming along just fine despite having had a few minor "accidents" next to the toilet.

In the first pic and video you can see Thomas using the "Red" insert which does not have a hole in it. Below are two new videos... one of Thomas and one of George in-which they are both using the "Amber" insert which has a hole in it. This hole is the next step in the training process.

One of the nice things about the cats reaching this stage is that I rarely ever have to clean out the insert anymore since the cats just do their "business" right through the hole into the water below!

Here is Thomas - Day 23:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ygaj-iUj5c

Here is George - Day 23:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IHyeDGTuRo

Um...what are you feeding your cats? That was a lot of kiitty-poo poo.

I think that was a side-effect of Thomas just learning to use the toilet. It seems he was "holding" his business for a long time before he would "give up" and use the toilet. Now that the cats are more comfortable with the toilet they are "going" more often and therefore are leaving much smaller "deposits".

Sorry, but I don't buy this. Cat poo has been flowing "downstream" for countless millennia before we came along and domesticated them.

1 Month and 26 Days of Potty Training my Cats

The Kitty gods have smiled upon me and my two cats... Today, both George and Thomas successfully moved to the "Green" insert of the Litter Kwitter training device!

The "Green" insert is the last and most difficult as it leaves almost no litter for the cat to use while doing it's "business".

I caught a video of George but did not get one of Thomas...

Male kitties, huh? Do they put the seat down when they're done?

What smart kitties! And it takes a lot of patience to teach them, too, so Yay for you!
