A basic idea of what a publisher has allready been stated here. Here is diagram of their congregational authority:
Local Congregations:
Unbaptized Publisher > Publisher > Pioneer > Ministerial Servant > Elder
Note that only men can fill the roles of Ministerial Servant and Elder, the most a woman can be is a pioneer (full time proselytizing)
With a hubby that is JW it may be in your best interest to read the books written by Raymond Franz and James Penton, they both have pretty good explanations of the organization and it's history that you should know about.
