Oh, god, people, I knew what it was as soon as I chomped down on it. Yep, there's no mistaking that hunk of filling when you chew on it. Does anyone else dread going to the dentist? That burning smell as they drill away yoour molar, and the suction thingy and water thingamajiggy really get me stressed. How do others stay calm, when it can drag on for 2 hours? Any tips to sidetrack my mind are appreciated. I've got an appointment tomorrow. And do they have to recline the chair so far back?

It's hell getting old. Some of my fillings must be 20 years old!

I have a filling that is 2 years old that came out this week. I'm mad as hell about it. Might as well get the thing pulled along with the rest, get some false teeth, so at least they will be strait for a change.

Lol, Jayhawk, I was thinking...if a crown is about 800 dollars, and a whole set of dentures around 2000, it'd be cheaper to just have them all pulled! Maybe fillings and crowns aren't lasting longer because there's money to be made! And I'm too vain to want dentures. But it'd make more sense, wouldn't it? That's ridiculous, a filling lasting such a short time. I'd be upset, too! Will the dentist fix it for free? I guess there's no warranty on teeth, is there?

No the dentist won't fix it. There is no such thing as a warranty on dental work. I suppose if it came out within 90 days, he would fix it for nothing. What I don't get, is why dental insurance is seperate from health insurance. Dentists are doctors, are they not? They are a specialist for the teeth just like a Pediatrist is a specialist for the feet. If there is one major flaw to the human body it is teeth. My cats don't seem to have the problems us people have when it comes to teeth.

Just remember that IF there is any pain involved, it will only be at the beginning, and it won't be much. Just relax as much as you can and it will be over before you know it.

In serious dental work, staring at a light helps to cope w the pain. Do you know how to meditate? That works good.

Last time I went to the dentist, they had to give me a valium to get me in the door!! I have a tooth that needs attention desperately!!! I'll be the first to admit, I hate going to the dentist!!

The dentists in Canada must be kinder. Nowadays they SWAB the needle entry point with an anaesthetic, DRIBBLE the stuff in as they go, and ask about a million times, "Do you feel anything?" There's a television on the wall for distraction. It sure beats the cheap tin toys my childhood dentist used to give out as compensation. All he had on HIS walls were sad velvet clowns.

I've had one root canal, and it went GREAT. I was in considerable pain beforehand (cracked tooth). I visualised the entire root being removed, and the pain going away. I kept telling my body the dentist was going to make it all better. And he did.

I know going to the dentist is not pleasant but be patient and do it. There is nothing like having your own teeth. Don't be so quick to say "pull it". That's ridiculous. I get the impression you didn't go for a long time and that is why you need all this work.

Just do it. You'll be glad you did. And when it's over make sure you go for cleanings at least once a year.
