Here is a few more, for the new ones:

"¼ our eyes of understanding should discern clearly the Battle of the Great Day of God Almighty now in progress¼ the glorious outcome ¾ Messiah's Kingdom" (Watch Tower, 1 September 1916, p. 265).

"The present great war in Europe is the beginning of the Armageddon of the scriptures." (Pastor Russell’s sermons pg.676 1917)

"His day of vengeance is "It is the day of vengeance, which began in the world war of 1914 and which will break like a furious morning storm in 1918…Also in the year 1918, when God destroys the churches wholesale and the church members by the millions it shall be that any that escape shall come to the works of Pastor Russell to learn the meaning of the downfall of Christianity." (the Finished Mystery 1917 Ed.pg.404, 485 1917)

"There was a measure of disappointment on the part of Jehovah’s faithful ones on earth concerning the years 1914.1918,and 1925, which disappointment lasted for a time. Later the faithful learned that these dates were definitely fixed in the scriptures, and they also learned to quit fixing dates for the future and predicting what would come to pass on a certain date…" (Vindication vol.1 pg.338)

"Why are you looking forward to 1975?" (W.T. pg.494 Aug. 15 1968)…Now it is firmly maintained that by the autumn of the year 1975 thebattle of Armageddon will have been fought and God’s new world will have been established."

"The date of the close of that 'battle' is definitely marked in Scripture as October, 1914. It is already in progress, its beginning dating from October, 1874."
    --Watchtower 1/15/1892, p.1355

"Be not surprised, then, when in subsequent chapters we present proofs that the setting up of the Kingdom of God is already begun, that it is pointed out in prophecy as due to begin the exercise of power in AD 1878, and that the "battle of the great day of God Almighty" ... will end in AD 1914 with the complete overthrow of earth's present rulership is already commenced." The Time Is At Hand, 1911 Edition, p 101

"They had preached that in an early time God would overthrow "Christendom". Many had emphasized the year 1925 as the date, and then when that date did not materialize the date was moved up to 1932. Again, 1932 came and "Christendom" was not destroyed, and now it was discovered that "Christendom" would be spared for a while longer for the sake of the Jonadab class, and this made the proud "elective elder" crowd very mad." THE WATCHTOWER 2/15/38 pg.54

"Receiving the gift, the marching children clasped it to them, not a toy or plaything for idle pleasure, but the Lord's provided instrument for most effective work in the remaining months before Armageddon." THE WATCHTOWER 9/15/41, pg.288

True, there have been those in times past who predicted an "end to the world," even announcing a specific date. The "end" did not come. They were guilty of false prophesying. Why? What was missing?... Missing from such people were God’s truths and the evidence that He was guiding and using them. But what about today? Today we have the evidence required, all of it, and it is overwhelming Awake! October 8, 1968, p. 23.

All of the Lord’s people looked forward to 1914 with joyful expectation. When that time came and passed there was much disappointment, chagrin, and mourning, and the Lord’s people were greatly in reproach. They were ridiculed by the clergy and their allies in particular, and pointed to with scorn, because they had said so much about 1914, and what would come to pass, and their ‘prophecies’ had not been fulfilled.

Wow Lady---good stuff you got here!! Isn't it amazing that if you pointed it out to a JW, they would call it apostate material even though it is there own literature??

That is central to their religion to pull people in, the fear, get in the modern day ark the WTS before you get nuked by a furious jehovah, and the hope isn't it great to enjoy eternal life in a paradise by purchasing your ticket with the FDS. It's a charlatan's little trick that worked very well for them for over 100 years now and they will keep it up for as long as they can. It's too profitable to let go even after it became absurd post 1995.

Good one. But I don't think this will sway many people. Who is going to care what is written on some ancient literature from the 1890's. Especially when almost everything back there has been changed today, not just the jws literature.

    R6laser,

You're right, the JWs would probably dismiss it. But they would dismiss most anti-Witness things they're told. What the Society taught in the past is important. I can accept that they would have got things wrong, and that the light could get brighter, but the fact that they were so far away from being right and that so much has changed shows how ridiculous they are. If they had so much wrong then, how can Witnesses be so sure everything is right now? Especially when they would accept any changes to current doctrine without much question as long as it came from the GB. Edit: And thanks for the scan LL, it's very good.

Here are the portions of that Watchtower in a more easily read format:

While it was an agreeable surprise to us (in view of the contrary sensational accounts so often published) to find the situation in Europe as we here describe it--in harmony with what the Scriptures had led us to expect--yet so great is our confidence in the Word of God and in the light of present truth shining upon it, that we could not have doubted its testimony whatever had been the appearances. The date of the close of that "battle" is definitely marked in Scripture as October, 1914. It is already in progress, its beginning dating from October, 1874. Thus far it has been chiefly a battle of words and a time of organizing forces --capital, labor, armies and secret societies...

...The Scriptures show also that the battle of the great day will begin with the Church of God, and that the overthrow of the great nominal church systems will precede the overthrow of the present civil powers; for the Lord is about to shake, not only the earth (the civil organization of society), but heaven (the ecclesiastical powers) also (Heb. 12:26), to the end that great "Babylon," falsely called Christendom --Christ's kingdom--may be completely destroyed. The great counterfeit kingdom of Christ, with all its allied civil and ecclesiastical powers, must go down as a great millstone into the sea, preparatory to the final establishment of the true Kingdom of Christ. Here, as in the world at large, the work of preparation is going on. The creeds, which for years have been reverenced and received without questioning, are now called up for inspection; and their inconsistencies and lack of Bible foundation is being discovered. As a consequence, the clergy, whose living and honors and worldly prospects in general are all bound up with the systems held together by these creeds, are in great trouble, and are looking about to see what can be done to strengthen the stakes and lengthen the cords of so-called Christianity. A general union of the various sects is suggested, with a simple creed formulated from the various points of agreement among them all and the ignoring of all other points of doctrine to which objection might be made by some.

One thing to keep in mind is that Russell saw the battle of Armageddon quite differently than the Witnesses do. What he saw was something more along the lines of this world's social and economic systems imploding with God's son having to step in and take over for the good of humanity. That some direct action against the political and military parts of the present world might take place was certainly a part of the scheme as he saw it, but the wholesale slaughter the Witnesses glory in was not. Since an implosion of societal systems was an integral part of the scheme he saw, that he would consider it to be an affair which required many years should be no suprise to folks.

My reading his Divine Plan of the Ages left me the impression that he was familiar with Marx's writngs and accepted some of Marx's conclusions that capitalist economic inequity would inevitably lead to conflict between laborers and capitalists which would spur the downfall of the economic system. In his fifteenth chapter, The Day of Jehovah, he comments on the situation between labor and capitalists in the late nineteenth century in a way which clearly shows such familiarity and tells why he doesn't think the measures which some were taking at the time (the naseant labor movement etc.) wouldn't work in the long run (greed on everybody's part). Like Marx, he miscalculated on that score. But then, hindsght 120 years later is 20/20 isn't it!

Before we judge Russell too harshly lets think about the fact that conditions back then were nothing like they are today. Aside from the primitive transportation systems and lack of medical knowledge we have today, those folks were not all that far from the most brutal war ever fought by the USA, the Civil War. They were still in recovery from that. the social systems we take for granted were nonexistent. There was no unemployment, social security for retirement or the poor. employers shamlessly exploited labor as if it were their God given right. So folks were severly underpaid and had much less job security than we have right now, in spite of how bad things are at the moment. People were getting tired of that and forming workers unions which at the time were being brutally suppressed by armed thugs hired by wealthy employers. Marxist inpired "Anarchists" were trying to overthrow governments everywhere. And they too were being brutally supressed by the governments. So it is easy to see where such a desparate situation as the late nineteenth century could well have been seen as Russell and many others as indicative of the end times.

At least I give him credit for not spreading the bloodthirsty vision for the end which the JWs and the Evangelicals.

As a witness you must keep looking forward to the kingdom of god.

Don't look back any one who puts his hand to the plow yadda yadda.

I don't know how you are able to read the bible then though??

That is an interesting and incriminating quotation. However, I just checked my CD and cannot find anything close to that in the Aug 15 issue (or anywhere in the entire collection of Watchtowers).

Can you please double-check your source and verify it for us?
