Dictators, despots and tyrants the world over hate knowledge and an intelligent population.
Just look at history and what happened in countries where Communism took over. The first people they went after were the intellectuals and journalists and the like. Generally speaking the ignorant lowest peasants were left alone - as long as they didn't make waves. These rulers all wanted an ignorant population that they could control.
