My brother and I droped out of school 9th and 11th grade respectivly. Both of us got our GEDs and moved forward from there. In high school I was lucky to pass witt a D-. College was different I graduated Cum laude. My first semester I made the Dean's list. (good grades) From then on it was a free ride all inclusive even some pocket change.

Moral of the story: Get good grades (As) and the school will want to keep you on board.

Other advice: Get to know your financial advisor personaly. They will make you aware of other perks. They are the people who chose who the $ go to. Something else get to be friends with your professors. During your senior yr take a fun class. I.E. My fun class was Biome Analysis 433E. The class was a trip to the Fla. Keys for a week. ( rode scooters and snorkled) Class requirements: Show Up = A

Granduated and my parents still wouldnt let me date this new brother in the hall because I was young and he was recently baptised so we just skipped dating and I ran away from home June 2, 2000 at 2:00 in the morning. We got in a coed dorm and I worked and since we were married and had little income, we got pell grants to go to college. His lazy butt wouldn't work so I had to work 40 hours a week and go to school full time and lived off of "pasta salad" (mayonaise and noodles and some seasoning) and ramen noodles. I almost starved and my JW family never gave me a thing!! So much for Jesus saying, "where were you when I was hungry?" Got divorced and started college again ... still havent finished and i'm 24.

A lot of great advice already, so all I'll say is the degree is totally worth it. There are so many programs to get you into school. Good grades will keep you there. I had no financial assistance from my parents, a lot don't. You may accrue some debt; especially in Grad school if you choose to go (work for a company that will pay). So what. It's cheap money. Work hard and talk to a lot of people about any help they have had or received. People, or at least I, really enjoy helping those that help themselves. You're on the right path.

One bit of advice, if you get out of school and you get a job but then you don't care for it... go and get another. Don't be unhappy. Do what you like. With your degree you'll be able to make choices and decisions based on what "you" want to do, not others and certainly not the borg.

You'll meet so many cool people in College. That's where I really realized that the Jehobees were all nuts; more importantly that I wasn't nuts.

Sorry I disapeared there... By 'no parental help' I acctualy meant 'parental opposition' so no money or emotional support. (I'm not very emotional so that's not a big problem.)

Yes I am a US citizen by birth.

Thanks these comments are acctualy quite helpfull.

I was discouraged from going to college as a teenager, but managed to get back in my 20's after I was married.

I was still a dub, and everyone opposed it but in a mild frowning way. I was married and otherwise in good standing so they had nothing on me. I was lucky in that my husband plus an adult education grant supported me through college (not much use to you, I know).

After that I was even luckier and was able to go to university. The hardest thing was being the wrong age. Everyone was younger than me, plus they didnt have to rush home to cook, clean, study their watchtower and go out on field service! I didnt get much drinking and socialising done at Uny, but I got a bloody good Degree.

Good luck with your endeavours, the time goes so quick once you start. It was all over before I had blinked and I wondered why I had wasted so much time before thinking there was no point because the big A was coming any minute.

I started college after high school but I dropped out because of finiacal reasons. (Your 19 years old - trying to go to college without you're parents help. What would you think would happen?) I was still a Witness at the time. I worked construction for almost ten years, when I started going to night school. After I left the Witnesses, I went back to school full time. I got my degree and now have a great graphic design career. All without the help of my parents. In fact when I finally graduated they never came to my party or even sent a card.

I won't lie though, it was one of the hardest thing I've even done. I would work 40 hours and week and go to school. Pull all nighters on projects and study all night long.

I guess I don't entirely apply since my unbelieving father scrounged up the money to send me but the last 2 years of my BA, my master's and my phd are all up to me. I work full time in a fast food restaurant and I scrimp everything including food to be sure I will be able to finance the degree. I have my boyfriend's support and that is all I really need to succeed.
