So you really are/were a policeman? When and how did you decide to move to Cyprus?

I know the Mumbles extremely well - I was there for my annual retreat a couple of months ago!

Crumpet: Yes I really really was, and luckily they accept I was too, so they keep sending me money every month.

I retired and sold the house last year (I've been divorced for four years) and my kids are adults. I got rid of most of my possessions and was free to come and go and travel wherever I wanted. I'd been to Cyprus several times and like the climate, and if I do decide to settle here it's one of very few places where I can get my pension without paying UK taxes first (taxes here are much lower).

I still haven't decided whether to settle here or not - I rent an apartment - but may well decide to do so. I will probably, however, want to retain the freedom to pack it all in a backpack and move on somewhere else. I was intending to go on the 2 day cruise from here to Lebanon in the autumn (when it's cooler) but we'll have to wait and see about that in view of current events. They suspended the cruises last week (it's only about 100 miles from here).

My family (uncle and cousins) live in West Cross, between Sketty and the Mumbles. One cousin (the rich and famous one) lives in Mumbles itself. A friend and former colleague lives in Limeslade. I lived for a couple of years in Bishopston and worked in Swansea.

sitting here in a nice airconditioned place, I can't really say I know what you are feeling at the moment, but it gets awfully hot here in texas and I've been through it when the ac is out for a few days at a time and I had a car without ac a few years back, that sucked.

My advice is spend as much time as possible at shopping malls, libraries or movie theaters, if they have air, maybe they don't there I don't know.

When you are at home, have at least a fan. Get a spray bottle with cold water and spray your legs and arms down every time you get uncomfortable. also, get ice packs for your wrists and ankles. I read something about cooling your wrists and ankles makes you feel comfortable right away, and I've tried it - it works! and take many cold showers! how could I forget those?

    good luck!

    There is no air conditioning

Not sure about the labour laws in the UK, but is that not a violation of every workplace safety code in existence? People die from heat stroke. How can they allow this??

::I've decided anyway that a wet bra under a white top is not an acceptable look for the office - so have just settled for taking it off and stuffing it in my handbag. I hate the damn things anyway!

That's a great idea, I've found in the summertime, the less clothes the better. Makes it so much more bearable that way.

Was that a heat related comment or were you remembering something else?! And yes cinema and library is excellent idea! Joe - it looks like we will have lots of familiar places to discuss - WeI used to go the Fforestfach congregation from time to time and am familiar with th West Cross Dick Barton's chippy!

misanthropic- i bet you;re a popular girl! hehe - just teasing!

KidA - unfortunately we don't appear to have a max temperature at work in the UK - although I think there is a minimum temperature and if it drops below that we can walk out.

The best reminiscences (?sp?) are always shared over a cold beer or two ...

Talking of which, it's 6.20 pm here now, no phone call from the BHC (I volunteered to help with the reception of evacuees from Lebanon, but obviously not needed) so it's time to start the evening perambulation. First stop, the ATM to get some beer tokens.

Have a lovely evening Joe g - you lucky thing! It sounds idyllic! And I did hear a boat docked this morning with evacuees from Lebanon so maybe you'll bump into some in the bars and come back here to share any news of the conflict.
