We're having summer in the UK this week so earlier this afternoon I put my two guinea pigs out in their run to 'mow the lawn' while I went indoors and had something to eat.

I went back out later to check that they still had some shade from the sun, stepped out of the door just in time to hear a loud SPLASH

Oh no!! I dashed to the pond to see if it was one of my cats who had fallen in. But it was one of the guinea pigs who'd managed to escape!!!

I pulled her out really quick and cleaned her up, she was still alive but she suddenly went really limp, I was preparing for the worst, but she laid there for about 10 minutes while I cuddled her and she recovered her strength. Phew!

It's a miracle how things worked (if you believe in that sort of thing!). I just happened to go out at the right time and also, she fell in the side where I have a large plant so that stopped her from going straight to the bottom - which she would have as she's an Abbyssinian (long hair).

    Pets - who'd have 'em?

They are such a nice small pet for kids. Our 4 kids had them when they were growing up. They would take them in a wagon w/towels on the bottom and a lot of grass for them to munch on during the trip to the candy store. When they got back home they would be in awe as to how many "piggy chicklets" there were in the towel.

Our mutt would treat the "piggys" as her own pups. She would lick their bottoms to clean them and escort them back to their cage.

While our son was in college, his sister and I bought him a pig whom he named "Scooter" or "Scoots" for short. This pig was just like a dog. Unbelievable. She would wait to go potty in her cage and never on the floor or furniture. She had such a personality. My son cried when Scoots died. My daughter had a beautiful pig, Emily, who had the most beautiful blue eyes. She was such a gentle lady and loving. Each of our piggys had their own personality and stories.

I'm happy you were out there at the right time as I don't know if they can "doggy paddle". Also you have to watch out for birds of prey when you have them out in the open. Don't you love it when they make their squeal of delight when you open the fridge door??

That was a good stroke of luck that you were there in time. I once saved a sheep from drowning, it got frightened by some dogs and run into the sea its hair got soaked and heavy and it couldn't get out so I went and pulled to the beach.

Sad Emo, it sounds as if your "mothers' intuition" is strong. Thank goodness your little darling is safe!

I am glad to hear your GP was okay. Maybe his body temp went down too much and your cuddling helped bring it back up.

I used to have a GP and I too put him out on the lawn. I knew that they like to gnaw on wood as they need to keep their teeth down. So he was happily munching away on our back flower bed border when my husband says "he is gnawing on pressure treated wood -- that is nasty stuff -- it contains arsenic". So I quickly stopped him from munching away. Guess he had enough though as he died two days later. It has been a little over a year and I miss the little guy and his squeaks.

didn't know guinea pigs could be such good pets. Sorry about your guy Purza.

Thanks goodgirl. They really are good pets and are pretty low maintenance (if you compare them to a dog). They are very vocal animals with lots of squeaks and gobble noises. They eat lots of fresh lettuce, carrots and they love hay. I used to clean my GP's cage about once a week (using Care Fresh).

Emo, so glad you sensed you were needed! It's would have been tragic losing a pet family member.

Juni, that's fascinating! I never knew they had so much personality, thanks for the education!
