I have never been to that part of the country before, but an elder once told me, if you travel anywhere, go on the Mississippi River.
I read the story (can't remember the title) that Mark Twain wrote about piloting a steamer on the river.

Well...growing up where I did...it can only be described as utterly and completely boring. It was a small community of no more than 200-300 people. Lot's of farmers and stuff like that.
The MS river is polluted and smells like ass. Although I'm sure it was a lot cleaner when Mark Twain was around it.
