if it can be proven that tobacco use was a practice before all the o-so-explicit cleanliness laws in deuteronomy then God's silence on the matter could be deemed as proof that he did not mind such things.

anyone know if tobacco use has caveman roots?

I think you won't need to go that far back. If it was common in 1st century why is it not mentioned in the NT if this should be as bad as other DFing reasons (like fornication).

Not likely the Jews were lighting up with tobacco.

this is all I could find:

    Genesis 12:16
He treated Abram well for her sake, and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, menservants and maidservants, and camels.

    I guess not -

c.1 BCE: Experts believe American inhabitants have begun finding ways to use tobacco, including smoking (in a number of variations), chewing and in probably hallucinogenic enemas (by the Peruvian Aguaruna aboriginals).

A brother in my cong gave up when someone asked him if he could ever imagine Jesus with a cigarette - he threw away his last packet & never smoked again.

I can't imagine Jesus eating gormet pizza washed down with cianti but he probably did. I can imagine Jesus giving Mary a box of Belgium Chocolates and Joseph a fine cuban cigar for Christmas but he probably didn't.

I can't imagine Jesus going to five meetings a week and filling in a monthly report card though.

Smoking is a very old practice. I think your answer may lay in Australian Indigenous Studies, after all they smoked long before the last ice-age and their culture predates the biblical Moses by at least 40,000 years unclebruce

Well you got about 40 trillion people to interview and decide if you agree with their opinion about it being right or wrong. Or you can search for yourself to try and find God's. 1 or 40 trillion...which would you rather try and please?

I don't know how He sees it. Nobody on the planet does either. Although people sure have many opinions of what He thinks about it.

Tobacco in the Middle East? No.

Deuteronomy was written maybe in the 7th century BC. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deuteronomy

Smoking tobacco was happening back then, but it was a continent away with an ocean in the middle. http://www.tobacco.org/History/Tobacco_History.html

    yea smoking is dumb--

But i thought some exactitude on the matter might shake things up

We shouldnt shun anyone with something so simple--rather we should encourage them

And we can't encourage them when we've sent them off ..........

The witnesses are in a great position to start helpful programs that cater to this and things of the like--they have the people who are willing to work and the meeting centers available..

It'll never happen though, they would have to come off their horse first, and it looks like they're nailed in the saddle.
