i got bottles of booze from elders when they knew i was underage.... they just bought me booze and said, just for being a good boy.... it was kinda weird...

Have you thought maybe it was a heartfelt gift? Maybe they were trying to reach out to you as people and not as religious drones. There are lots of people "inside" who yearn to be free, real people...maybe they're trying to make some contact. I can tell you, nobody ever gave me a bottle of scotch before or after I left!
