“So, it's not about religious freedom after all? This kid's apparently going into politics (according to Marvin) and this was a shrewd political move.

“Great way to undermine everything you've said up to this point, Marvin!”

    AndDontCallMeShirley,

    You missed the boat somewhere.

Long ago in this discussion I pointed out the political aspect of Costner’s act, and have spoken of it frequently since then. Perhaps that’s why you’ve understood things I said as you have. Perhaps you should re-read the whole discussion.

“The quote I posted was what YOU said, not what the school officials said.”

Then you’re response should have been to ask for my source.

You can read John Eby’s comments at: http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2013/06/06/hear-what-valedictorian-said-for-cheers/comment-page-46/

    Marvin,

I make money advocating. You are not advocating. Rather, you are arguing to argue. You think you know First Amendment principles. Well, you don't. Indeed, you know them well for a normal person. Compared to a lawyer practicing in this area, you know notihing. It is all relative.

My life's work is the Establishment Clause b/c of the persecution against my Witness family. Normal people must know what it means and where to draw lines. A handful of lawyers cannot maintain the principle. Masses of normal people must draw the liines.

OMG, Simon is a total idiot. He misspelled "political" in "political expression." Therefore, all Simon has every contributed in this world is negated. You are not Shelby and some others here or not here anymore.

Before the takeover of the Supreme Court by right wing conservatives, the student and principal may have faced serious consequences. Any Jew, Moslem, or atheist present could sue. Now the area is muddy. Life will bring the consequences to the student. I am not so angry with the student. People do goofy things as kids. Older people recall their younger selves and excuse much. Let him do this in a business place. Perhaps he will have clients that he is entertaining and taking a nice tax deduction for the meal. Let him pray and see if he ever has clients again. America is not--so many countries have changed recently-the Taliban. We are justifiably proud of our culture and diversity. His actions were unAmerican. Your actions are completely irrational. Are we competing now to see who has the last post?

You harmed your internet presence with this argument. How can we ever read your blog in the same way? I want to respect your views. Someday in the near future I will be reading your blog with rapt attention and the back of mind will trigger memories of this thread.

That is a revelation late in the coming, Marvin. The prostituting of religion as a springboard to the launching a political "career" is crusty, old-hat - even from barely-out-of-diapers graduates prone to rote religiosity.

As soon as I heard this young man recite the Lord's Prayer, I saw political maneouvre written all over his smarmy complexion. Put it this way, if he had made a fierce "defence" of athiesm in his speech, his advisors would have told him, "Go home, son, your career's over before it's even started".

Expressing (Christian) sentiments is one of the most assuredly cheap ways of getting your political career off the ground, second only to kissing babies.

Contrary to some of the earliest posts in this thread, I would expect, "genuine" Christians to abhor the public parade of religiosity out of the high reality-based likelihood that they witnessing, not a young man's faith so much as the launch of a political career.

marv. i do understand your " ill defend to the death your right to say it" attitude. i can respect it. in fact i have been looking at it biased. im not one to take offense and am the first to dish it out. for many people being decieved is a soft spot. a christian should be the first to be respectful of others but usually arent.

so congrats. i dig your pov. i would defend those rights if necessary. i still think it was unneccesarry. when prayer was outlawed in daniel, he did it on the DL.

I don’t see how granting liberty to a valedictorian to recite the Lord’s Prayer and state agreement with it during his speech gives preferential treatment to a single religion.....MS

First of all,Roy was not granted liberty to recite the lords prayer..

    (Another attempted derailment..)

You don`t see how a Christian Prayer, recited by a Christian in front of an Audience..

Gives preferential treatment to the Christian Religion?..

I doubt your that Stupid Marvin..

Man your running with this for as far as you can go..

    Your posts say..

"Lets see how many times I can Bait JWN into Derailing this thread.."

when the valedictorian could be of any religion. Please explain how this occurs.....MS

    What if This?..What if That?"

What if Monkeys took over WalMart?!..

    Anything but..

"Roy mislead the School Staff and"

"Shoved his Beliefs down the Audiences Throat"

    My best guess is..

You have every intention of Gaming this Forum until Simon shuts you down..

    My Question is Why?..

Why cause this much of a Pointless Disturbance on JWN?.

FS - I was teasing Band, maybe 'general populace' instead of 'normal' ... but really, joking.
