The Future of the Watchtower Society and the Internet

It seems that the Watchtower Society was very ill prepared for the advent of the Internet. Perhaps, some of the governing body thought the end would come before it became a big problem. Now it is a big problem and is only going to get worse.

I wonder if they made a big mistake by being so critical of the Internet in it's early years. If they encouraged witnessing on the Internet, they could have easily drowned out the voices of apostates. Now some witnesses are using the Internet to try to defend the Watchtower Society, but they often just make themselves look silly. For example, suppose someone puts up a video that is favorable to Jehovah's Witnesses on Youtube. The people who watch it see all sorts of links to related videos that are critical of Jehovah's Witnesses. If a Witness makes a comment, then it usually doesn't take long for former members to point out its flaws.

This is a big dilemma for the Watchtower Society. If they relax their stand on the Internet, they will lose a lot of members who are suddenly exposed to the facts. If they continue to be critical of using the Internet, then they will eventually be overcome be technical advances that make the Internet an important and nearly unavoidable part of daily life. Either that or they will have to withdraw even further from normal society.

Since the Internet is becoming more social, it is becoming harder to view favorable information without also seeing contrary opinions. Of course the official websites of Jehovah's Witnesses don't allow commenting and still have some control over the information (assuming you weren't distracted by apostate sites that came up in a Google search). How long is that going to last? Sites that don't allow comments already face a modest disadvantage because active commenting can help a sites in search results. This trend will probably continue. I assume they will try to maintain their control over information, but this may cause their sites to become increasingly irrelevant and hard to find.

I can also imagine a time in the not too distant future when it will be far more difficult for site owners to avoid public debate of their claims. Suppose you could install a little device on your search engine that allows you to see what others have thought about the site you are visiting or will take you to other sites (like this one) that provide commentary about their information. This could be devastating for the Watchtower Society.

How do you think the Internet will effect the Watchtower Society in the future?

If you know my posts from some usenet discussion groups the internet served me very well as you can see . I am not from Jehovah Witnesses organization but I am sympathizing with them as they clearly surpass other religious organizations. I am not saying they preaching without mistakes but they are the number 1 from all religious organizations as a whole.

Any time you go from them you have to find the better replacement : the better religious organization not according to your thinking but according to what the Bible says.

If my prediction of the end of the present evil world order comes true in 2011 AD the future for the both : the Watchtower and the internet looks fantastic in God's Kingdom.

    g 00 1/22 p.19 How Can I Avoid Dangers on the Internet?***

Although the Internet can be useful, it can also seem like a library without librarians or other observers. One can browse it with the feeling that no one else is around. But this is one of the greatest dangers of using the Internet. Why? Because countless Web sites contain material that is morally corrupt and spiritually destructive. Thus, the Internet can expose young Christians to temptation. After all, humans are naturally curious—a tendency that Satan the Devil has long exploited. Satan certainly took advantage of Eve’s curiosity and ‘seduced her by his cunning.’—2 Corinthians 11:3.

    w 04 9/1 p.16 par.13 Beware of "the Voice of Strangers"***

Regarding harmful associations, the psalmist David states: "I have not sat with men of untruth; and with those who hide what they are I do not come in." (Psalm 26:4) Again, do you note the trait typical of strangers? They hide who they are—just as Satan hid his identity by using a serpent. Today, some immoral people hide their identity and true intentions by using the Internet. In chat rooms, perverse adults may even pose as youths to lure you into a trap. Young ones, please be extremely cautious lest you be harmed spiritually.—Psalm 119:101; Proverbs 22:3.

km 1/03 p.1 par.3 Living Up to Our Dedication***

Christians are admonished that they "cannot be partaking of ‘the table of Jehovah’ and the table of demons." (1 Cor. 10:21) This requires that we guard against unwholesome entertainment, bad associations, and dangers on the Internet. It also calls for our shunning apostate material. Being alert to these and other tactics of Satan will help us to live up to our dedication.

jd chap.7 p.91 par.18 Serve Jehovah According to His High Standards***

We can just imagine the disgusting scene: The Israelites were bending down to idols during sexual orgies. Our knowing how God condemned that can help each one of us to fight against snares that Satan sets via the Internet.

    es 07 p.56 May***

So, then, should we listen to apostates, read their literature, or examine their Web sites on the Internet? If we love God and the truth, we will not do so. We should not allow apostates into our homes or even greet them, for such actions would make us ‘sharers in their wicked works.’

    DT,

I think you are right on with your assessment of the Internet's impact on the Borg. But, I think you may be a little too generous in how long it is going to take for the trickle of anti-JW info, that witnesses are acquiring from the internet, to turn into a flood. Kids at school are increasingly internet saavy and often use the internet to research things for school.

I believe that this is one reason the Borg has come down hard on higer education ban. The internet is such an integral part of university life that anyone who goes to college will inevitably be exposed to the real truth about the Dubs. The Borg is nothing more than a crackpot, adventist, millenialist, pie-in-the-sky church and they know that the internet will completely blow their cover.

Even if the Borg is able to maintain the status quo with current members (which is highly doubtful--see "V's" Watchtower Comments that cites the statistic of 61% of recent converts leaving the Borg), they will be unable to attract significant numbers of new converts if the anti-JW internet sites remain so prevalent (and there is every reason to believe they will) when search engines bring them up. Additionally, as previously mentioned, the effect of the internet on young ones,in the Borg is bound to be devastating.

My Dad was an US Navy veteran and he had an expression that perfectly describes the position the Borg is in ....whatever their response it is going to be like "shoveling shit against the tide".... they are not going to be just done, they are going to be well done by the internet.

some of the governing body thought the end would come before it became a big problem.

The grumbling body doesn't actually BELIEVE the crap they feed to their R&F. I suspect that they'll try to ban the internet soon. It reminds me of what I overheard this sister with a thick Jamacian accent saying once:

"Dat intah-net, it's just taking so many of our brothers! It sure is Satan! I don't think we should even use dat intah-net!"

I think the governing body is negotiating with the Amish as we speak to move all the witnesses into the country and adopt a similar life style as the Amish.
