My mom found out that I joined the YMCA. She's going to tell the elders probably tonight. Rediculous.

Step 1: Print out the Y.W.C.A. Mission Statement.
Step 2: Identify the names of all Jehovah's Witness sponsored women's shelters, daycare centers, local charities, schools, hospitals, universities and print them out. (Hint: zero!)
Step 3: Explain how the complete lack of charity among Jehovah's Witnesses has you frustrated in your efforts to bring about improvement in the lives of your fellow human beings.
Step 4: Explain how passing out Watchtower magazines and Awake! magazines doesn't seem to do anything for people but lead them to expect Armageddon will solve all their problems soon and that this mindset seems to PREVENT rather than AID the problems of poor education and financial independance for women.
Step 5: Don't get pissed off at the close-minded lecture you will recieve in rebuttal.
Step 6: Keep asking why there are no JW charities or organizations to improve life NOW.
Step 7: When you are told that Armageddon WILL solve all mankind's problems soon point out that every single man, woman, and child who grew up believing that "solution" has seen over 100 years go by without actual improvement. That INTERIM is the lifetime of entire generations of families who went without necessities by becoming PASSIVE instead of PRO-ACTIVE.
Step 8: Ask where in the bible it says charity is INcompatible with being a Christian. Then insist you will abide by the scripture as soon as they show it to you.
Step 9: Ask if Jesus set an example of charitable works or not and watch them squirm as they answer.

Did you join for the gym, health club? or some support group? Not that it matters to me, you are a grown woman and should be able to make decisions for yourself.
I agree with sspo, remind them that the WTS had membership with the UN.

Terry has some great advice there and throwing back their UN affiliation at them is perfect. They condemn the UN throughout their publications and yet there joined it. If they say well it was just for use of the library - say great you arev joining so you can use the gym equipment or something flip!

Can you try this- "Why, is it wrong to join? Okay, I didn't know." ?

I'm not really all that worried about the elders. It doesn't matter that much what I say because they won't hear it anyway. I'm guilty as charged: YMCA member, and thats all they need. But my mom is going to rat me out. Not that I'm surprised - I've read enough of your stories not to be - but it is hard to believe she's going to do it. Kind of like when you're watching a movie and you know the bad guy is going to jump out of the dark but you still flinch anyway.
