Do discussion boards have any healing effect?

    Hi friends,

I read somewhere else of the thought that discussion boards for ex-dubs, are not the place to heal unless there is proffesional help onboard. I disagree. I think the countless stories of ones who have came HERE ....for instance, have been helped greatly. Some have even claimed it has saved their life or another in some way.

So.....do YOU feel these boards help a person recover from leaving a cult? Does a person need added proffesional help.....or will these boards suffice? Has it helped you to the point of what you would call.....RECOVERY?

    Gumby,

I think that these boards are healthy....I think it also depends on the individual though if they need professional help or not....It can always be an option if need be...We are all adults and shouuld be able to recognize if these boards work for them or not....For me, Gumby your my professional help...

Without doubt this discussion board has helped my wife and I make an easier exit from Watchtower. Just knowing that there are thousands of others out there who could genuinely empathise and not just sympathise with our situation was a real tonic. It certainly helped US heal - but others are still going to require professional help too, such as those with severe depression caused by this heinous cult.

I think they do help. Personally, its nice to know you're not alone. I've read countless stories on this board that mirror my own experiences,

and its refreshing to know that there are people who are as fucked up as I am because of their own choices or choices made for them. As

    they say, misery likes company...and yes you're a miserable bunch. ( - ;

It seems that a db can play a powerful role, especially at the beginning.

I would caution anyone to avoid confusing successful recovery with survival. "Saving your life" is great... and I see some on this board and elsewhere that need their lives saved over and over again - that's not very "recovered" in my book.

My two pence: use a board like this as a resource - validate your feelings and experiences, create support, all the things that JWD is great at... AND go see a fricking therapist, preferably one who does not specialize in cult stuff. And as someone recently said (regrettably while upset, but it WAS said) go get a life!

To have a happy, successful life, we need to integrate into a society (to some degree at least) that many of us grew up isolated from. Use whatever resources you can to do that, but never rely on just one. Go create in-person relationships too, with people that have never been JWs. The saddest thing I can think of that could come from my being a JW is me allowing myself to be identified in my own mind as an XJW for the rest of my life - become something else!

    Peace, out.

    Dam rights they help, gumby.

It's nice to come here and vent, and laugh with others who believed and did the stupid things that we all did, LOL!

The internet is also good for tomatoe farms.

I agree. A person STILL has to take POSITIVE action with their lives upon exiting......along with help from others. Some never move beyond exiting the dubs, but that is their PERSONAL experience, others move on just fine.

Dansk........you are an example of those I spoke of.

    * gumbys happy others agree with him for a change*

    (thanks Morty)

Minimus......yes, you HAVE been great for this place.....thank you.

    YX....I agree

    Shamus.....always has a healing effect

Shamus, do you think cherry tomotoes or hot house tomatoes do better on the internet? Do you think they get enough sun?

Yes, I have found it to be a place of healing and comfort. Knowing you are not "alone" helps one to ease thru the new transition in life.
