Observations about dubs as people...

I was thinking back on some of the people I knew growing up, as well as my own family - many of whom are dubs... Tell me what your own experiences are of these kind of people, did you notice a large prevalence of these types of people in the congs you attended:

    1. Health nuts: Into all sorts of alternative health theories like Iridology, Reflexology, Homeopathy etc?

    2. Get Rich Quick folk: Always getting involved in this scheme or that, this business or that - especially pyramid type things?

If you did notice such a thing, do you thing that there is something in the dub psyche that attracts them to this kind of thing - or did it just happen to be that at that time of my life I was exposed to a coincidentally large number of people with these interests?

Any other commonalities that you could add to this list?

There was a get rich quick pyramid scheme spreading all through the congregation, and a lot of them lost a lot of money. The scheme was presented in such a way by one brother to make you feel guilty and responsible for not joining that I guess most were taken in the same way as they were by the WTS.

I have noticed both trends (although I am a believer in reflexology myself)...

About #2, it may be that since JWs lack educational credentials, yet they want to make more money, they reach out to any scheme that is offered so they don't have to continue in their low-paying jobs...

I see more and more people suckered into the Goji juice chain right now. One brother really bought into the stuff, as he's been battling Type 1 diabetes and cancer in remission. The makers of the goji juice claim that it's been shown to slow the growth of cancer cells. Unfortunately I heard that he wasn't feeling so good lately...he may not be in remission any more...

Conspiracy theorists: Religon, Health, Employment, Government, People, History, Media.

There must be a secret about all of them.

Definitely Number 2 - especially full time pioneers who where looking for supplemental income...

Yep. Both. I actually was just talking to someone about the health nut thing. I think more than health nut, it is the alternative medicine like you mentioned. My theory is that many witnesses do not have the best jobs, thus no insurance, thus alternative medicine....

With regard to get-rich schemes, I have certainly seen that as well. I knew one family (father was/is an elder), and they were always hatching some strange plan on how to earn money.

I am really curious as to why the witnesses are attracted to such things.

i was using homeopathy long before i was assimilated.... got the habit from the "midwifery/homebirth fringe element" i was hanging with....i continue to use it for family, friends and pets with anecdotal efficacy that makes it a first choice when acute illnesses arise....

i may have shaken the dub dust off my feet, but my homeopathic remedies are stocked and my texts are highlighted!!

Definitely the get-rich-quick types... every new scheme that comes along.

Avon, Candles, Pampered Chef, Magnets, Telephone/internet service, Noni juice, you name it.

    And Pioneers are the worst.
