I apologise for taking the liberty of using my alias to attract attention but a number of people have contacted me to ask what they could do to help by way of being a stem cell donor (without a stem cell donation soon I will likely die). I cannot express enough just how appreciative I am for such wonderful thoughtful gestures. It is possible that YOUR stem cells are a perfect match for me and that YOU could literally save my life.

However, if you are not a match you could very well save someone else's life - so do please consider being a stem cell donor. The procedure really is relatively painless (just a couple of needle insertions).

Please contact the following for more advice: Anthony Nolan Trust: http://www.londonpilot.nhs.uk/supportServices/details.aspx?id=VO0144

    OR: http://www.blood.co.uk/pages/marrow_info.html

If you live in the UK these two organisations should be able to help you.

I am meeting a stem cell coordinator soon to talk about the risks involved for me and when a matched donor is located I shall be admitted into hospital for 4-6 weeks.

PLEASE do consider this life-saving procedure.

    Thank you,

    Ian

What is your blood group Ian? Just wondering if you're the same as me, I'm B positive.

I've been on the Unrelated Bone Marrow Donor Registry for many years already. Haven't been called yet, though.

Thanks for the info Ian.When I read about the stem cell need, I too was wondering about donating. Does it depend on your blood group? I'll go ahead and check out those two sites now. We're glad to hear that things are going ok for you at present.

Love to you, Claire and family

OMG! Thanks for making me aware of this Ian.

I was in ignorance of the possibility of such donations.

Does it depend on your blood group?

Actually, from what I recall when I joined the Registry, it does not depend on your blood type. Your specimen will be tested for half a dozen different "markers", and the more matches between markers the higher the chance of a successful bone marrow transplant. The minimum number of required matches is four out of six.
