For once this is not about my relationship problems!

It is way way hot here! I daren't even go outside for lunch otherwise I shall just end up having my own personal sweat fest.

How can I stay cool in my office as London experiences the hottest July day since 1911? so far we've made 87.8F but its still climbing!

There is no air conditioning and anyway the National Grid is threatening there will be nationwide power cut if people don't turn of their air conditioining units. Apparently it uses far more energy to get us cool in this country than it does to keep us warm in winter and the grid can't cope.

What about fans? If you can't plug a fan in, try a battery operated fan. I have a Westinghouse fan (D batteries) that I take to picnics and other outdoor events. We have AC at work but my desk is by a window so the afternoon soon defeats the AC. What about the cooling packs that wrap around knees or arms. There are these things you put in cold water and wrap around your neck that keep you cool. (Google: neck coolers)

Crumpet: Take a week off, jump on a plane and come and visit me! It's hotter here (about 36 in the shade) but you'd enjoy it more! There's a communal pool, the sea is about 5 mins walk, a/c in the apartment and a big variety of bars with very cold beer within a couple of hundred yards. And you don't have to wear 'office' clothes.

Blondie the cooling wraps sound a brilliant idea. I also thought of soaking my bra in cold water and putting it back on under my clothes - ingenius huh?

Joe - thats probably the best invitation I have had all year mate! Are you anywhere near Paphos by any chance - excuse my lack of georgraphy if I'm miles off? The idea of a pool is making my eyes go misty with longing!

Crumpet: Yes, I live in Pafos, on the Tombs of the Kings Road. Over-developed, noisy, lively and good fun! The pool is warm but refreshing.

The offer, BTW, is entirely genuine.

I wonder if its the humidity that's the real problem. I visited Israel a few years back at the hottest time of year and was reasonably comfortable even in a temperature of 42C (in the Negev!) but almost zero humidity.

Here, at a much lower temperature but humidity hovering around 45%, I find it stifling, I'm already short of breath and we haven't hit the max yet

I'm working in a shop which gets full sun in the afternoon - should be hitting me in the next 20 minutes. I have a fan but it's not doing much good - just circulating hot air. Tomorrow, I'm going to put a wheat bag in the freezer and keep cool with that for as long as I can.

I'm struggling to understand just what you mean by this, could you explain in a bit more detail and perhaps post a helpful photo or two or a short movie to explain the technique.

    Appreciate it,

Naughty Nic NO! I've decided anyway that a wet bra under a white top is not an acceptable look for the office - so have just settled for taking it off and stuffing it in my handbag. I hate the damn things anyway!

And Joe - the reason i asked is that a colleague has an apartment out there, which I'm considering renting ofr two weeks over christmas and new year if I can afford it plus the flights which seem a bit pricey so I'd definitely be up for a meet up in one of those cold bars if i come over. are you originally from the UK?

Joe, as you know I'm in Cyprus from Monday 24th. Don't know if I'll get the chance to pop in as I'm staying with family but I'd love to try. If you're okay to PM me your phone number I'll give you a bell if I'm near Pafos or Pisouri.

I know it's all relative, but... it's supposed to hit 106 degrees F today here in Dallas.

I keep the thermostat set at 79 or 80 during the day while we're not home. I turn it to about 75 or 76 when we get home and turn on two fans, a medium and a small, in the living room. I close the doors to the two bedrooms and it keeps quite nicely. And we have high ceilings.

Since this will be the first month in our new place (apartment), we'll just have to see how much this will cost us.
