One of the paragraphs read that 'if in the area where you live you need higher education after you graduate, then the young person must speak with the parents in order to help them balance the schedule so that he/she doesn't neglect spiritual things'.

Alright, I thought, that's a somewhat balanced point of view; I thought, good they're coming along with the times we live in. Yeah, right!!! That sure didn't last long.

It all got ruined in the last paragraph. Like good politicians, speaking out of both sides of their mouths, they go on to say in the very last paragraph that this young lad joined his father as a window cleaner so that he could continue in a more worthwhile work of pioneering. The pitts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What idiots!!! Now a days, everybody needs educations further than a HS diploma!!!

You don't need a higher education to work for a fellow dubbies' cleaning company. They have to keep a few "at the top" so they will still have big contributors to the WT. So the higher-ups start cleaning businesses and the rest of us can work for them at minimum wage. Since you don't have an education you are happy to have a job and feed their machine.

To be fair, Doubtfully, if you were operating from a millenialist paradigm you would probably not be as concerned with higher education either. I mean, if the world's going to end why bother?

I started a window-cleaning business after high-school to pioneer. Looking back, I regret pioneering, but not starting my business. Although it is not something I want to do forevermore (but, of course, the JWs don't think they'll be cleaning windows very long either, right?) it has provided more money than most people think is possible to make in such work. I never, ever make less than $30 an hour. There are days where I can easily make $300 in seven or eight hours of work. That's not bad.

That being said, I now work a couple days a week window-cleaning to support my college education instead of pioneering. Nonetheless, it's important to keep in mind where the JWs are coming from. They don't do this sort of thing to slack off (well, some do I guess). Your statement to the effect that "everyone needs a college education" is simply wrong. Look at Bill Gates and Warren Buffet!

Sometimes, only some rare times, I think there's a purpose of my existance inside the WTBTS. It's crap like this that I don't put up with.

I'm very vocal about how important a higher education is, and they can't stop me. Although I have been labeled 'spiritually weak' for this and a few other issues.

    dorothy,

Your post sounded utterly paranoid. I know many JWs who started cleaning, maintenence, decorating or construction businesses and they were not "higher ups." In fact, the JWs I know that own such businesses and employ others pay rather well.

I'm not a JW apologist and I find the WT's view of education very troublesome. But the claims you make are, well, outrageous.

To the Witnesses an education is a very dangerous thing. You are in danger of learning the truth. During the course of an education the student may find out that the JW's are just another religion. They learn that religion was originally a concept created by humans to help explain how their environment worked, for example if a disease began to spread through family or community, it must be that the Gods or Spirits need to be appeased.

Then when higher concentrations of people began living in ever larger groups, a government was needed to run things. The spiritual was then used by governments to help control the people. Social norms are cultivated and enforced through religion. Learning these things could weaken the hold that the JW's have on their people.

I scares the stuffings out of GB.

It would certainly be easier to control an uneducated window washer than a well educated professional now wouldn't it? So the people must be kept ingnorant and in danger of poverty, because poverty keeps them humble and in need.

A simple HS diploma won't get you a full earning potential. There needs to be some other compliment to that HS diploma. Perhaps not necessarily college, but something else.

Trades schooling (air conditioning, plumbing, electrician, etc.), or EMT/paramedic/Fire school will get you money and a career that you may love and be willing to stick with for life.

Cleaning portable toilets and the like sure gives money, but who the hell would be content with that shitty job???!!!

It's about job satisfaction, my friend. Perhaps the reason why you're using your window cleaning earnings to go to college. All about job satisfaction!!!

I've plenty of friends that make way more money than I do, but their jobs are awful! And here I am dealing with real life issues, meaningful stuff, awesome educated people, great environment; I've found a career/job I really love! What got me here?! An education further than just my HS diploma, thank you very much!

Furthering education is necessary, absolutely necessary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, Deb, that's not right! In the western world, the dubs enjoy excellent standards of living and I'm not sure that "further education" would advance that very much.

And who will they impress with this message? How many kids will say "I wanna be a window washer!" ??

They're shooting themselves in the foot with this silly nonsense. Furthermore, they NEED money and support

from "materialistic" congregations. A deeply sincere elder recently expressed his dismay privately to me

that the other elders may be painting a rosy picture of things to the C.O. and Society - in that wealthy area.

The kids stay in the 'truth' - for a price - and that cost doesn't include minimum wage jobs.
