Categories of Former Jehovah's Witnesses
by neverendingjourney ini was never disfellowshipped, but it's been about 10 years since i was an active jw.
i've made an occasional meeting or half-day at an assembly here or there, strictly at the behest of family (maybe once a year), but i'm completely disconnected.
more importantly, mentally i'm 100% free.. we all have a tendency to project our views and beliefs onto others, and tending to believe that other former jws share our views is no different.

The Watchtower: Roots, Shoots, and Those in Cahoots
by neverendingjourney ini'm typically not a fan of jw criticism from a christian point of view (the jws are silly, but everything i believe in is truth), but i think this video does a solid job of putting into historical context the religious influences behind the jehovah's witnesses.
.
it's pretty eye-opening for those who have not yet researched the origins of the religious movement and who, much as i did, once belived the doctrines originated from the "great minds" of past watchtower society presidents.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_c-pdt0sse.

God and the Meaning of Life: Where I Now Stand
by neverendingjourney infifteen years ago, jehovah god was as real as the ground below me.
as it turns out, my belief was founded on lies, half-truths, and a burning desire on my part to possess a theory of everything, something that tied up all the loose ends and make sense of the world.. i stopped going to meetings nearly six years ago, and ive mostly given up the search for the ever-elusive theory of everything.
im not really a science guy, but ive read a few books on atheism and biology in the past few years.

Why Did God Commission Russell to Preach to People Who Would All Die Before Armageddon?
by neverendingjourney ini've posted this thought before, but i've yet to get a lot of feedback.
it's also not a point i see brought up very much on jwd, but it seems like a very simple, logical way of disproving witness doctrine/eschatology.. witnesses believe that the parable of the wheat and the weeds is having its fulfillment in our time.
that's to say that jehovah began to gather his people in these last days so that those rightly-disposed can survive armageddon.

This article should be required reading for all JWs who graduate from high school
by neverendingjourney inhttp://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/14/business/14schools.html.
the gist of the article is that trade schools are becoming increasingly poplular in our down economy, and that many of them deceptively market themselves, to put it nicely.
far too many students graduate from these outfits with tens of thousands of dollars of debt and zero job prospects.. when i was 19 years old, i decided to take the "spiritual" and "theocratic" route by foregoing a college education in favor of a quick trade school program.

Threat of 1980 Rebellion/Schism--Real or Perceived?
by neverendingjourney inthe way crisis of conscience lays it out, despite their reservations on doctrine, ray franz and ed dunlap would have been more than happy to live out their lives within the jw ranks without causing any disturbance.
ray was contemplating resigning from the gb and living out his life quietly somewhere outside bethel.
ed preferred to remain in bethel due to his advanced age.

Did Anyone See the Nightline Special on Scientology?
by neverendingjourney ini looked to see if there had been a thread started about this already, but i couldn't find one.
anyway, i just finished watching the nightline special on scientology.
martin bashir (the guy who did the michael jackson interview that brought about the second child molestation complaint) interviewed a spokesman for scientology and 3 former high-ranking sea org members.
